At UFC 140 Saturday night Frank Mir appeared to be one flurry from losing his fight against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Fortunately for Mir, Big Nog was suddenly inspired to go for a submission, and in so doing was himsefl submitted. In the process his arm broke, an injury cited by UFC President Dana White as the worst he ever saw in the Octagon, worse than Tim Sylvia's arm break (also vs. Mir), and worse even than Corey Hill's leg break vs. Dale Hartt.
In a recent interview with OGlobo, Nogueira could only say of the fight losing strategy "It was stupid."
On Ariel Helwani's MMA Hour, Mir provided detail from the other side of the submission, saying he felt badly for the injury, but was proud to win.
"I was pretty stunned," Mir said of the right behind the ear that stunned him. "He caught me really good on the side of the ear. That's why my legs were so wobbly ... When I first shot I was dizzy ... I was definitely stunned."
"I know from experience that you have to constantly work, or they wil stop the fight .. I've learned now that with the rules even if you are rocked, as long as you are trying to improve position (they will not stop it). As long as I keep driving forward I will be okay."
"Then he went for the Guillotine which actually kind of made me nervous. The punches weren't landing on the chin and the side of the head and I was recovering. Then it was 'man he just threw me in a guilotine.' It was going fro bad to worse as I think that is one of Nogueira's better moves."
"I just locked (the kimura) up and I wanted to make sure he didn't get out. ... I don't think in terms of let me hold him in such a way i cnag et a break on his arm ... I'm locking up a submission, and in my mind I want to keep applying force and don't lose it ... By the time he tapped Herb Dean was jumping on him. He took too long I think. He waited too long by a second and by then the injury had already occured."
"I understand the mentality; you're trying to wait for the last second but once I pulled the arm back he could have tapped. But this is Nogueira, a great ground fighter, he's been in that move in practice and gotten out, so he hesitated I'm sure."
"I'm not going to let go of a hold until the referee tells me to break the hold. I would never do anything dirty or purposely hurt you. I just want to win the fight, the fact that you have to get medical treatment afterwards that sucks."
"He's another martial artist I hope he can go back to the gym Monday like everyone else.I feel bad that he has to go get it repaired, but I don't feel bad it happened. It would be like a quarterback apologizing for scoring a touchdown. If me and Nogueira ever rolled again, I could easily be the one on the receiving end of the kimura."
"I want a fight that's a positive step toward a title shot. When they start naming opponents I'll ask, that it's someone that takes me closer to No. 1 title contention."
