Coker: Melendez would beat Edgar

by Damon Martin | source: mmaweekly.com

Last weekend, Gilbert Melendez defeated Jorge Masvidal to defend his Strikeforce Lightweight Title, a title which he has held since 2009. With the acquisition of Strikeforce by the UFC, and subsequent move of welterweight champion Nick Diaz, it was assumed it was a matter of time before Melendez joined the UFC ranks.

Recently however, Strikeforce announced a renewed agree with Showtime, keeping the organization in tact and promoting shows through 2012, a big part of which was to keep the lightweight champion with the promotion. Still it doesn't keep Strikeforce President Scott Coker from believing he still has the best lightweight in the world:

“I believe he is the No. 1 lightweight in the world,” said Coker in an interview with MMAWeekly Radio that will air next week.

To justify his belief in Melendez beyond just looking at his record, Coker thinks that Melendez would best the other top lightweights, particularly UFC champion Frankie Edgar.

“Believe me, those other guys, I take nothing away from them. Listen, styles make fights, and I’m really looking at Frankie Edgar and Gilbert, that match-up as to who would win that fight and how that fight would look,” said Coker.

“Ben Henderson, Cowboy Cerrone, all those guys are extremely talented, but like I said styles make fights. I think Gilbert and Frankie would be a great fight, but I think Gilbert would come out on top.”

Yea but masvidal isn't a better boxer than Frankie though. Masvidal would get absolute raped in a real boxing match.

Personally I think Gray BJ Benson and Pettis all beat Melendez but it could go either way bc Melendez is very good in a lot of areas. . . BUT IMO Frankie would win no question. Frankie just has that X factor that no quit attitude the makes him almost Rockyesque I have yet to be overwhelmingly impressed by Gil except when he beat up on Aoki. Frankie has beaten the odds convincingly several times now (yes he won the 1st BJ and Maynard fights IMO) and has shown why he's #1 at lightweight. Frankie has nothing to prove Gil does.

Gil matches up very good with Frankie, I would take Gil over Frankie, Gil has better standup, is just as quick, and seems to have a better chin. It would be close but I would take Gil, on the other hand, I would take Benson and Pettis over Melendez. Fighting is about matchups, Melendez matches up so well with Frankie, especially seeing how great of a striker he has become.

" I respect Frankie as a fighter. But he is infinitely beatable as his last two Gray Maynard fights have demonstrated." Did you mean "definitely" beatable?

Jorge Masvidal made Paul Daley look bad.Jorge Masvidal would make Frankie Edgar look bad. Masvidal has a huge reach on Frankie. Frankie would get countered frequently by Masvidal when he tries to close the gap.No one ever looks impressive against Masvidal. Because people have no idea how good Masvidal is, they are overlooking Melendez's performance.

Of course Coker would say that about his own guy. Let's make this fight happen, Edgar is going to outclass him. Gil looked mediocre in the masvidal fight
