Hendo turned down fight with Little Nog

source: twitter.com

On "UFC Tonight" and Twitter last night, Ariel Helwani provided background on the recently announced fight between Alexander Gustafsson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at Ufc on Fuel 2 in Swden on April 14, 2012.

The UFC's plan was to offer Rashad Evans the next shot at current champion Jon Jones, if Evans defeated Phil Davis at UFC On Fox 2. The Hendo vs. Nogueira winner would next in line for a title shot against the winner of Evans vs. Jones.

Hendo apparently turned down what would be a very winnable fight that would land him a title fight, presumably because he thinks he can get it straight way.

Also reported, @danawhite said that Dan Henderson turned down a fight against Lil' Nog, so they then decided to book Nog-Gustafsson ...

.. the original plan was if Evans beat Davis, he would face Jones. The winner of Hendo/Nog would then fight for the #1 contender. ...

... Now, since Hendo turned down the Nog fight, his status is unclear. #ufctonight

MW may not be the deepest div but when you factor in top contenders at the time they faced Anderson: Franklin (x2), Nate, Henderson, Vitor, Okami, Chael, Maia and how the represent every possible style, its just nuts how people try and paint the div as that weak. And Leites, Cote and Lutter were certainly no jokes either. No worse than any other champ has faced. Anderson has just cleaned out the division as much as anything and add the fact that many UGers just dont like him.

He has beaten enough quality opposition to be considered the greatest this sport has seen so far.So, congrats indeed.

Its crazy how big some of the top MWs are in person, too. Guys like Lindland dwarf regional level LHW fighters by a significant amount.

I haven't read all of this but I'd imagine Dan knows he's got a limited number of fights left to go, better to go for the bigger name/paycheck and/or a belt. He's really got nothing to win fighting Lil Nog, win or lose.

THIS Dana was so ready to give Bisping a title shot he forgot he announced the winner would fight Silva.  So typical Dana had to strong arm Dan to Strikeforce all cause of his ego.

I think some of it can be attributed to match making but the division also lacks talent at the lower end. They could improve it immensely if they would just move the Strikeforce MW division into the UFC and then make some meaningful fights and actually build up some contenders for once...

How about the real elephant in the room? WTF is wrong with MW that legit contenders dont seem to emerge? Years have gone by since Menne/Castillo and its just random title shots or guys getting hosed by the champ(Franklin or Silva) before they can be built up. Why is this class different than the others?

"  It seems that if you act like a 4th grader, you are more likely though (ie: Chael) " Great point. Just like if you are a female fighter trying to get on tv and make money it makes far more sense to talk shit and post pictures half nude than it does to try legitimately working your way up the regional scene. I still dont recall any boxers, baseball players, football, soccer, etc athletes being able to do that? Did the Yankees or Cowboys ever put someone on the field who DIDNT have an extensive backround playing the game at the previous levels OR perform so well in tryouts that they clearly had the skills to perform at the elite level? MMA even in 2012 seems to be half real merit-based sport and half pro wrestling creative booking. Its a shame.

For you and the other two guys who quoted me. I do not think JBJ is unbeatable, but i do not think Dan is the one to solve the riddle. Sure he has beat some top level guys, but none of those guys had over a FOOT REACH ADVANTAGE. Dan has been winning by crushing guys with his granite hands and having the chin to take their best shots and keep going. None of those guys could keep Dan at bay with the ol palm to the face move. JBJ hits Dan 3 times everytime Dan gets close enough to throw one punch at him. JBJs MMA wrestling is better than Dan's at this point too, so how does Dan win this fight?
