Aldo KO's Mendes in spectacular fashion with :01 second left of 1st

Jose Aldo is still the featherweight champion of the UFC.

Aldo, fighting back home in Brazil for the first time since signing with Zuffa, defeated Chad Mendes by first-round knockout at UFC 142, defending his featherweight title and showing once again that he's among the most lethal strikers in mixed martial arts, in any weight class.

It was a huge left knee to Mendes' face that knocked Mendes flat on his back, and Aldo then pounced with a couple of punches on the ground before referee Mario Yamasaki stopped the fight at the 4 minute, 59 second mark of the first round -- just one second remained in the round.

Aldo could have also tripped and fell KOing himself on the way.

Kind of glad I didn't buy this PPV, the main card had something like 15 minutes of actual fighting, the co-main was marred by Johnson's inability to make weight (so the contest was in many ways meaningless) plus a few controversial finishes. Good for Aldo and Vitor though, they both reasserted their "Beast" status.

I'm not saying it would have neded differently, BUT!!! You can't say it would have ended the same had Aldo not grabbed the fence. For allw e know, Aldo could have been supp'd and KO from the fall. Mendes could have ended up with his back and beaten him. You never know what "woulda" happened. I think it's pretty unfair to any fighter to say that he would have still lost had the other guy not cheated. At the end of the day, grabbing the fence to avoid a takedown is cheating. I guess you can boast that Aldo stuffed Mendes's takedown attempts as long as you acknowledge his having cheated to avoid Mendes's most likely attempt.

aldo is from another city and the flag was for their soccer club. aldo and anderson are both sponsored by soccer clubs. but the city where the fight was is a different club. the flag was for his team and the locals are crazy when it comes to soccer so when he held up the oposing teams frag the crowd went on autopilot and started to boo. so crazy but no different than chael holding up a portland trailblazers flag in l.a. at staples center after a win lol.
