Condit defeats Diaz by decision to become interim champion

by Kevin Iole | source: yahoo.com

Carlos Condit performed brilliantly under pressure, stuck to his game plan even under the most extreme conditions, connected at a higher percentage than Nick Diaz and then proceeded to get denounced for his extraordinary effort.

Fans howled their displeasure after Condit’s brilliant tactics – to circle away from Diaz’s punches and use kicks to chop his legs – led him to a unanimous decision victory Saturday in the main event of UFC 143 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. The win gave Condit the interim welterweight championship and earned him a motorcycle as a bonus.

Judges Patricia Morse Jarman and Cecil Peoples had it 49-46 for Condit, each giving him all but the third round. Judge Junichiro Kamijo had it 48-47 for Condit, giving him Rounds 1, 3 and 4. Yahoo! Sports had it 48-47 for Condit.

It was a flawless performance in a high-pressure situation, yet fans protested it because was Diaz moving forward the whole fight.

Condit won by a big margin due to a smart plan and great skill. To hit without getting hit is without doubt the best way to go in the long run. Not that this wil stop haters from hating because he didnt stand and trade like a toughman brawler.

Carlos Condit moved in and out, notably with leg kicks, and outstruck Diaz by a wide margin.FightMetric credits Condit with an overall striking advantage 151-105, including 68-4 in kicks. With near unanimity, MMA news sites called it for Condit, including MMA Fighting (48-47 Condit), MMAWeekly.com (50-45 Condit), MMAjunkie.com (49-46 Condit), MMAmania.com (49-46 Condit)."Carlos Condit won," UFC President Dana White said definitively. "He went in there, and he fought a great fight. He stuck to his gameplan and didn't fall in Nick Diaz's game."

Can't argue with my POV I'm a professional photographer and I have a different POV then most people watching video, I had to actually stare at still shots of every exchange. Here is my results.  Actually I originally thought it was very close, however as I edited the photos from the fight it actually didn't seem close at all. I shot over 1000 picture of the fight of every exchange and went through every picture and what I noticed is that Condit had over 5-6 hits to 1 on Diaz the whole fight. The reason why it appeared closer then it was is because in a lot of exchanges it looked like Diaz hit but he actually didn't. Carlos has very good defensive striking in that he keeps his shoulders up while striking, to protect the counter, most of Diaz's strikes were hitting Condit on the shoulders. Carlos also turned and ducked away from a lot of the punches that did land taking out a lot of their impact. They also didn't to appear to have much on it when he did hit. He has good hands comes at you at different angles but there isn't a whole lot of power behind it, his body shots when he had Condit cornered looked like there wasn't much force behind them. These results are from looking at 1000s of pictures from the entire fight. It changes my video of how I saw the fight live.

got their numbers, because I'd love to ask them. I'd also like to ask them how a fighter who is "running" away from the fight consistently landed more shots and trhrew more shots. Anyone who looks at the stats and still says Condit lost is just silly. The reason anyone is giving Diaz the 5th is because of the takedown with one minute left and not even comiong close to any type of submission, and ending up getting transitioned into having Carlos on his back after attempting a very sloppy armbar. What about the previous four minutes of that round where Carlos landed twice as many strikes, that doesn't count? I say bullshit because if we flip the script and Condit took Diaz down with a minute left and Condit got that round, everyone would be crying their eyes out about it. I really can't understand why anyone gave Diaz that fight.
