Maynard visits AKA; wasn't prepared for Edgar properly

source: yahoo.com

Maynard, faced with climbing back up the ladder, felt it was time for a change. A Las Vegas mainstay since 2006, he left Xtreme Couture and moved to American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Ca. But it wasn't simply about freshening things up.

"Gray just was not prepared. It was really one of those deals where a coach within his staff just would not pay attention any other coaches. He was getting really upset if any other coach tried to explain to him 'hey, this is how hard I'm going to push Gray in my session. You need to back off in your session so he can recover," said Trigg, a former trainer partner of Maynard's at Xtreme Couture. "[Maynard] wasn't prepared. It's ultimately up to one coach that didn't pay attention."

Ok, I come to this website, and read the forums too, like 10 times a day, and I never post but Im going to have to respond to this statement. "Flavor of the month"?!?! XC has been a top gyms for YEARS. Yes, Gils gone (hes at drysdales now BTW). But XC still has several top coaches (Rodrigo Artilheiro, Randy Couture still helps out when he's around, Dennis Davis, Tim Lane, Vinny Magalhaes, Neil Melanson, Ray Sefo etc) And you guys dont see all the random coaches/fighters that come in regularly to help teach/prepare fighters. Also, Maynard is still training at XC. He's just mixing it up and travelling to other locations to train now as well. Its not that difficult to see who is and isnt coaching/training at XC, just look at their facebook page for recent pics. (E.g.: John Alessio,Vitor Belfort,Michael Chandler,Ryan Couture,Randy Couture,Evan Dunham,Forrest Griffin,Kyle Griffin,John Gunderson,Jay Hieron,Martin Kampmann,Vinny Magalhaes, Mike Pyle, amir Sadollah,Ray Sefo,Brad Tavares,Frank Trigg.)And those are just the regular, every day guys and/or guys whose camps are there. That doesnt include the plethora of guys who stop in and coach/train sporatically. E.g. Tom Lawlor and Seth seth petruzelli are there now. Jake Ellenberger stops in from time to time. Cruz, davis, gustafsson and pearson were there the week of the last UFC in vegas. GSp was recently there. King Mo, Mitrione, Drysdale, Roy Nelson etc. all train there semi-regularly. Overeem was recently there. Stun Gun Kim had his camp there a few times in a row last year. Pat Militech taught a class there recently. The list goes on and on. This information is easy to come by, again, XC's Facebook and website have this info. The UG has turned to shit in the past few years. Such a shame.

I seem to recall Randy saying quite clearly in the Primetime leading up to the fight that he believed Maynard would have to go to his bread and butter and out wrestle Frankie if he wanted to win the title.

You don't think he 'wanted to' dominate the whole fight? Maynard starts strong, but is unable to adapt.

Gray actually did say this. He said he didn't get a proper camp and it was difficult to train.

Why are people getting on Maynard for what Trigg is saying? Especially when his friction with Xtreme Couture at the time is well known?

I agree. It seems obvious that Maynard is the superior fighter, as he makes clear at the beginning of his fights with Edger. Let's just be honest. When Maynard wants to, he dominates Edger. But for whatever reason, he slows down and lets Edger back in. Don't get me wrong, Edger is a hell of a fighter, and he was spectacular in knocking out Gray. I'm a bigger fan of Frankie for sure, but it really does seem as though Gray's failures are as important as Frankie's skill and heart in the outcome of their fights.

Considering how much Maynard gave away both of those last two fights after the first round, I think its fair to say he wasn't prepared as well as he could be. I don't get all the hate. It doesn't take anything away from Edgar.
