Fabricio Werdum vs. Mike Russow in Brazil, late June

by Ariel Helwani | source: mmafighting.com

A heavyweight fight between Fabricio Werdum and Mike Russow is close to being finalized, according to sources close to both camps. Both fighters have already verbally agreed to the bout, which is expected to take place on the UFC's return to Brazil later this year, which is slated for late June 2012.

Werdum looked fantastic in his return to the UFC in February, defeating Roy Nelson via unanimous decision.

Russow, who also works a full-time Chicago police officer, most recently defeated Jon Olav Einemo at UFC on FOX 2 in January. The win extended Russow's overall winning streak to 11 in a row and four straight inside the Octagon.

I don't see the outrage and how it's such an insult to Werdum or step backwards to fight Russow. Werdum ended his first UFC run with an embarassing KO upset loss as he was "keeping busy" (and getting lazy and FAT) waiting for his title shot and just made his UFC re-debut riding a Strikeforce loss where he looked pathetic (and so did Overeem-that was a horrible display of a "fight"). He just beat Roy Nelson, the UFC HW division human punching bag, aka Cabbage v2.0. Whooptie fucking doo.....he beat Roy Nelson. There aren't a lot of other guys available at the moment and Mike Russow is riding a 4 fight winning streak in the UFC and has 1 mma loss his entire career to Sergei K forever ago. Russow hasn't beaten anyone who matters yet in the UFC, but he also hasn't been giving the opportunity to and just like Mark Hunt, who is now on a 3 fight winning streak, the UFC can't have guys like Russow and Hunt racking up 4, 5, or 6 wins in a row against nobodies in a shallow division. They have to match them up with someone in the on paper "top 10".....now rather than later.

Stylistically though this is a much easier fight. Werdum is way better on the ground and should be able to beat him standing. Just a bit of an easier fight then that unknown kid he fought

The last time the UFC gave Werdum what was supposed to be an easy showcase "keep him busy until his title shot" fight he got KTFO.

You guys haven't caught on to the fact that the UFC Brazil shows are just a way to get wins for the Brazilian fighters in front of the home crowd? Bet every Brazilian fighting, it's a bookie's nightmare. One will fuck up and lose in spite of getting a cynical matchup, but the rest will do their job

Not great but don't see that Zuffa have alternative. Carwin is not fit..who else do u give werdum, everyone else is booked. Hunt Struve is interesting. With Russow win streak and using basic ballpark fightmatrix levels it's not so bad. Keeps Werdum warm to fight loser of Reem JDS or winner of Barnett Cormier...
