Demian Maia dropping to 170

Guys, now I ll moving down to 170 pounds. Next fight I ll be a welterwheight @UFC

Demian Maia won his first five fights in the UFC by submission, four of them so spectacular they earned submission of the night. Since then he has gone 4-4, including seven fights that went to decision, capped by an uninspired loss to Chris Weidman at UFC on Fox 2 earlier this year.

Maia's move to Welterweight is doubtless spurred because a title path to the 185 Middleweight division is unlikely, particularly after a loss to a taunting Anderson Silva in 2010.

He said in a recent interview that he had not made a test cut to 170 yet.

Ya if he loses some mass and does it right a drop could help him.

He had opportunities to play from his back in that fight and choose to stand back up.

Always been a fan of Maia and 170 should have been his weight from the beginning. Hopefully he will continue to focus on improved striking in training while utilizing a gameplan that focuses more on his superior grappling in the future. I feel like he has been a little too comfortable w/ standup battles in his recent fights. Hopefully we see him in some good matchups.

I've been praying he would drop to 170 for a while now. He has put on size since entering the UFC but he still isn't a very big MW. I think WW will be perfect for him. And for those that think he chooses to stand and fight think again. 3 of his 4 losses were because he could not take his opponent down and/or keep them down.... Munoz, Silva, and Weidman. He had no choice but to stand and trade. In the Marquart fight he got caught very early!

"  good move...has no shot at 185." 185 is a lot less wrestler-heavy than 170, and Demian has never lost a fight on the ground. I don't see how he has a better shot in a division where he will have much more trouble taking anyone down.

I would just like him to use his best skills and he seems to stray from that.
