Askren retains title; complete Bellator 64

Prior to his Bellator 64 title fight, welterweight champion Ben Askren talked about flashing improvements to his striking, but when it came time to fight, he showed that he's going to continue to focus on his wrestling strength until someone stops him. To date, no one has. Add Douglas Lima to that list, as his latest challenger went down in yet another unanimous decision win for Askren.

The four-time collegiate wrestling All-American wasn't able to take Lima down at will, but his relentless style virtually ensured that Lima was going down eventually. Even if it didn't work, he took space away from Lima, not allowing him to fire off offense.

Askren did spend the majority of the fight on top, throwing short strikes and elbows while Lima tried to find a way out, but that was mostly like drowning in quicksand; a lot of effort with no hope.

For any of you knocking on Ben's wrestling, GTFO. That dude strait up dominates everyone with the highest level of wrestling that you will ever see in MMA. He just dominated a scary and world class opponent, like it was nothing. He was playing with Lima. And it was not a lay n pray like you would see with Fitch or T-woodley, it was quite awesome to watch. And if you did not like watching this, like Askren said, go watch boxing if you want. One thing I would like to add: I wouldn't mind seeing Gegard style up-kicks in Amer. MMA, and Aoki style under armor pants. This will make the wrestling in MMA a little more exciting, as there will be more KO's and submissions.

Every Askren fight i watch makes me smile, hes had some close calls but his game-plan is something i think every good wrestler coming in to MMA needs to take a close look at.I don't think wrestlers should spend their time initially to become pure strikers, they should work only on striking to the clinch transitions and then just be relentless with their takedowns.i cringe when i see guys like joe warren or King Mo go out there and get KTFO because they are trying to strike more than they should.Wrestlers coming in to MMA should learn anti-BJJ and submission defense for at least 6-8 months before even putting on a pair of gloves. You would see alot more success of high level wrestlers if they followed the gameplan of a Jon Fitch, Chael Sonnen or Ben Askren; no fear of the strikes, relentless clinching and takedowns with ground control.
