Saunders wins split decision; complete TUF Live, Episode 8 recap

by Luke Thomas | source:

The judging was controversial, but it doesn't matter. Chris Saunders, picked dead last among all contestants on this season, defeated Team Cruz's overall second pick Sam Sacilia by split decision tonight on TUF: Live. Adelaide Byrd and Tony Weeks scored the bout 20-18 for Chris Saunders. Patricia Morse Jarman had it 20-18 for Sam Sicilia.

The first round and the second didn't look dramatically different. Sicilia opened with intense cage pressure and overhands. Sicilia threw wild strikes constantly and was briefly taken down. Throughout the course of the round, Saunders worked knees to the body.

Things changed, however, in the second half of the first round. A low kick got Sicilia thinking and that's when Saunders landed a head kick that nearly puts Sicilia's lights out. The Team Cruz standout hung on, but continued to eat shots throughout the course of the round.

I gave both rounds for Sicilia to... at least he definitely won round 2, this decision is a shame.

I dont think a third round would have changed the outcome... scicillia was gassed out and saunders still had good breathing patterns.

Always fun seeing the underdog win. Great fight.

I was expecting more from Sicilia. Very bad strategy in the 1st, when he allowed Saunders to push him against the cage and basically destroy his body with knees. That's why I guess he was winded in the second. But I can't understand why he didn't adapt sooner and stop trying to impose his wrestling. Also, wasn't he supposed to be a superior wrestler?

2nd was close. I gave it to Saunders but could have seen it going to Sam.

anybody who says Sicilia gets gassed is correct.  as a fighter you are supposed to push yourelf to the end.  anyone who isnt gassed at the end is not trying to finish.

IMO, split decisions on TUF fights should always go to the third.

Way too damn close to not go into a third round. Sicilia threw way more quality strikes in my opinion, unless i was just seeing things.
