Guillard: I'm going to be the 155 lb. champion

by Mike Fleig | source: buddhasport.com

Mike Fleig- Strictly based on that. Putting together a win streak of five, six or even seven like in Jim Miller’s case doesn’t get you a title shot in this division. Then you see other guys drop down to featherweight win 1 or 2 fights and get a title shot down there. Does switching weight classes ever cross your mind?

Melvin Guillard- “Not really. I’m content with what’s going on. You know you just have to keep working hard and keep training and keep on getting better. The more time I put in it just puts me closer to my goal and that’s being the champion. I believe I can be champion at 155. There’s no point for me to run to another weight class, I’m gonna be champion at 155.”

He has all the talent In the world , and speed to kill but I think it's purely mental why he keeps getting subbd . U cannot be in mma let alone UFC this long without ur seb defense naturally progressing ... I think he knows what to do but when put in the situation just panics under pressure . If he could get his head straight he would take some stopping at 155

It won't happen.Even if it did, it would be very bad for the sport. He'd end up being the Daryl Strawberry of MMA.

If he dropped, he'd have a chance at the belt. The guy is a tremendous athlete, that's undeniable. Seems like he would have huge advantages at 145lbs. In fact he could be the one guy with the strength and speed and explosiveness to challenge Jose. He's got grappling holes in his game, but, he's under 30 and he's got a ton of experience. He's got about 20 knockouts. And almost all of his losses come by way of sub... A good coach and a good gameplan, and he could take the featherweight belt.

I don't know what it is about Guillard in particular that makes people act like he's so much better than he is. He undoubtedly should've lost to Tibau and arguably lost to Stephens and Torres. On top of that, he hasn't been anywhere near as dominant as people like to think he has when he does end up getting submitted. Guillard's not beating these guys down before they come back with hail mary submissions, though that's what everyone seems to think happens. In the Diaz fight, the only significant offense he really had was when he dropped him in the first 10 seconds. After that, it was pretty close and I had the edge going to Diaz in the 2nd round before the guillotine. Against Miller, he was doing well and all but it's not like he ever actually came close to finishing that fight. People act like he was stupid for spamming flying knees, failing to take into account that it was those same knees in the first place that were keeping Miller off balance, hurting him and making him look so bad. I mean, even with all that said I'd still say he could be a great fighter one day if he could get his submission defense in check but it's not just that. The dude is a striker with a weak chin, he isn't getting TKOd or finished because everyone who hurts him just opts to go for his neck instead. I'm not sure anyone else in the LW divion is on his ass from a Stevenson jab or put on ice skates by a weak Lauzon lead hook. I couldn't believe how much people were overrating him going into the Lauzon fight, the dude will never even get to a title fight let alone become champ.

Million dollar body, ten cent head. Melvin will never be a champ because he can't get out of his own way.  He will always wilt when the pressure is on.
