Dave Herman: BJJ is still 'pretty much a waste of time'

source: mmasucka.com

But one can’t help to laugh at “Pee Wee’s” quick one-liners and bold statements. Such was the case back at UFC 115 in the post fight press conference where he brashly stated that BJJ doesn’t work in MMA. It’s tough to tell if he was serious about the proclamation but when asked about it again he still backs up his claim.

I mean even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while, but Jiu-Jitsu is pretty much a waste of time. However, if I were to teach self defense to a girl I would teach her Jiu-Jitsu because jits is pretty much how a smaller/weaker person might be able to trick you into losing. So for self defense for girls I think it’s great.

Roy Nelson has a black belt in BJJ and it probably will be something Herman will or should be concerned about if the fight goes to the mat. So if BJJ is useless in MMA what does Dave suggest?

Punching people in the face usually works pretty well.

Perhaps. All MMA training camps teach BJJ, so it is strange to say that it is worthless. It seem that way because you train endlessly on all of the moves, and you become equal par BJJ guys who spent nearly a decade in a Dojo.

Raise your hand if you've ever accidentally set up and finished an omoplata late in a match/fight without a gi... Anyone?  Anyone???   You can call it whatever you want to keep people from thinking you care about BJJ, but you're not really fooling anyone.

This thread is a who's who of traditional martial artists aka BJJers with poor reading comprehension. He said it is "...pretty much a waste of time." He didn't say it was a complete to total waste of time. So anyone who brings up his win by Omo Plata just had elementary school level reading comprehension. BJJers are the new generation of TMAists. They will blindly and eagerly fight and defend anyone who attacks their sensei or style. They like to discuss lineage. They use terminology in another language even though they are in their own country. They wear a gi. If it walks like a duck....it's a traditional martial art.

He's right. Roger Gracie said himself 80% of BJJ does not work in MMA. Basically all Herman is saying here is that it is better to focus your training on other aspects.

"even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while" clearly you all should have just read the actual article where he addresses this magic loophole you all found.

I couldn't agree more. All you need on Tue ground is lateral movement and flexibility. Brasilia Jew Jitsu is a marketing scam imho.
