Dana White: Shogun camp said he would get cut before fighting Glover

Getting into the UFC is all about win streaks against quality opponents. 32-year-old Glover Teixeira who has now won 16 straight victories since 2005. Although perhaps best known for his Chuck Liddell like one touch and they're done striking, which has been honed the last few years at John Hackleman's The Pit, Teixeira is a past winner of the Brazil Abu Dhabi qualifier. In short, Teixeira is a dangerous beast, and was held back only by visa issues, until now.

At UFC 146 in May Teixeira made his UFC debut, disposing of Kyle Kingsbury with a Kata Gatame choke.

However, the UFC had an even more dangerous opponent in mind for him - Shogun. However, as White detailed in a post fight interview with Ariel Helwani, the Rua camp did not want the fight.

Ariel Helwani: You had to change the next main event, now it's Shogun vs. Brandon Vera. What was the decision making there, why put Brandon Vera in the main event? … Shogun didn't want to fight Teixeira, right?

Dana White:  “Yeah, he said he’d actually rather be cut, than to have to fight him. Dude, nobody wants to fight this guy. Nobody wants to fight this guy. We’re trying to match this guy up with somebody, but he didn’t mind fighting Brandon Vera. So, he’s fighting Brandon Vera.

“I don’t want to sound like I’m disrespecting Shogun, because I’m not. I’m just telling the truth, you know? It’s verbatim what his people said when we talked to them. And you know me, I tell it like it is. If you don’t want that out in public, then don’t say it to me. Then don’t say it on the phone, because I’m gonna say what was said.”

“Shogun is a warrior. That guy has fought everybody, from Pride to the UFC. His last fight with Dan Henderson was awesome. It is what it is. It’s just one of those weird situations… I’ve never seen a guy at the level Shogun is at not want to fight a guy so bad.”

In a June 1 interview with Tatame, imediately after MMAJunkie first reported that Shogun had turned down the fight, Glover's manager Julio Heller denied that the fight had been refused.

“I just sent a message to the UFC. I’m waiting for their call”, Heller said. “(Turning down a fight with Glover) it’s not true at all”.

Julio said they’ll wait for the UFC before making further comments, and the decision to fight Glover, or any other opponent, is in Shogun and his coach Andre Dida’s hands.

“We have to wait for the names whey’ll offer, and then we’ll see what we do."

Given White's past expressions of outrage over erroneous communication with other individuals and parties, it would be wise for Shogun's camp to coordinate more tightly.

This.....and I was an absolute Vera nuthugger before Stainiac stole his soul.  He hasn't looked hungry since.  I'm slightly excited for this fight only because I see nothing but strikes, and a chance for Shogun to stick around.  I can see both sides on the Glover argument (I lean towards ducking), but I want to see more Shogun either way.......because when he fights he brings it.

In the end, Dana was trying to build up a new contender for Jones. If Glover beat Shogun, he would have claim to a title shot with maybe one more top ten win, or maybe a fight with Alexander.Like Sonnen says, you have to be willing to fight anyone in your weight class. If you think you deserve another title shot, then prove it by beating anyone in your category.

Not only is this not true but, it is surprising to see this from somebody with a start date of '01.Now that Glover is back let it be known he has some catching up to do and he is gonna steamroll people.
