Maynard takes split decision over Guida in lackluster headliner

by Mike Chiappetta | source:

Guida walked into the cage as the overwhelming crowd favorite, but minute-by-minute, round-by-round he lost them.

Maynard spent much of the two opening two rounds stalking Guida, but could hardly ever catch him. At times, his movement was simple and effective evasion from a dangerous situation. At other times, it could more simply be described as running away.

In the fourth round, Maynard dropped his hands to his side and verbally taunted Guida, offering his chin as a target. Guida took the opportunity to throw three strikes, and Maynard never even raised his hands to defend himself, he was so unconcerned with Guida's power. Then Guida ducked low for the takedown, and Maynard sprawled before trying a guillotine.

With that, any remaining members of the Atlantic City, New Jersey crowd that were originally rooting for Guida completely swung in Maynard's favor, so thrilled that he'd lured Guida into some sustained offense.

In the fifth, Maynard again basically opened up his defense hoping for Guida to wade in, but he mostly resisted until referee Dan Miragliotta called timeout to warn Guida he would take a point away if he continued to fail to engage.

Before the official result was read, the Revel Casino crowd chanted Maynard's name, and received their wish.

With better enforcement of rules/reffing. Guida should have had so many points deducted and maybe even DQ'd

So Grey won that fight for a simple reason, although points are awarded for strikes and Guida landed more, this is not point fighting, it is professional prize fighting and effective aggression and a willingness to engage are also part of the scoring criteria. Anyone who thinks that Guida won that fight should go watch karate point fighting tournaments and forget about full contact fight sports. Guida track shoes must be worn out after all that running. I am glad that Maynard won. I was never a fan of his but I am now.

Hair pulling? Cut off your Pippy Long Stockings pony tail and it wont get in the way during a muay thai clinch. Illegal. Sheesh.

a fight and not to mention a headliner like that really hurts their ability to gain new fans.even i as a fan from ufc 1 am starting to lose some interest lately.i used to throw huge ufc parties where i would need to bring the tv out to the patio so everybody can watch. now they say no lets go......... fill in the blank.

you cant just 'send a message', if you are going to score the fight on points, then score the motherfucker ON the least, it was a draw, sure Gray was stronger, but he was plodding, easily frustrated, and that hair-pulling shit was illegal....Gr will NEVER be champion, Bendo is going to handle him convincingly, mark my words.

This implies that the judges were deliberately trying to prove a point instead of fairly judging the fight. The judges called the fight exactly correct. No message other than Gray won fair and square.

No one should win a fight anywhere doing what Guida did tonite. He robbed everyone of a good fight with that bullshit gameplan of his. I'm very glad the judges sent a message...
