UFC sending Frank Mir to Strikeforce to fight champion Daniel Cormier

source: usatoday.com

USA TODAY Sports confirmed with UFC and Strikeforce officials that Mir has agreed to meet Strikeforce grand prix winner and former two-time Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier (10-0 MMA, 7-0 SF) in the co-main event of September's Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy fight card, on Sept. 29 at Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento, and airs on Showtime.

"There has been a lot of speculation as to who Cormier would fight next, and this is the fight that makes the most sense," UFC president Dana White said. "The reality is, Cormier is one of the best heavyweights in the world. He just won the grand prix and beat Josh Barnett. He needs to fight opponents of that caliber, and Frank Mir is that guy."

When's this fight happening? Would think it would have been announced by now if it was on the Sept. Melendez card

Mir can't take dc down and he is not mobile enough on the feet to avoid dc's bombs. He gets rocked standing up in almost every fight he has. Late in your career that's just not a good look. If frank wins this it will be a fucking miracle. Stranger things have happened but outside of a submission while dc is trying to finish, franks gettin toe tagged.

man,i seriously cant believe people are counting mir out like this, its crazy to me honestly.I understand cormier is one of the new guys coming up big,but as much as i dont like mir im not counting him out.id put money on mir as an underdog against cormier.

Interested to see the odds for sure. Even though mir will be "downgrading" to SF, I would think he will be a huge underdog

No one has mentioned Mir's huge reach advantage (79" vs 71"). He knocked Kongo on his butt, KO'd Cro Cop, and KO'd Big Nog. IMO the only way Cormier wins is to ground and pound from half guard, or bully against the fence. I'm surprised everyone is underestimating Mir in this one...he's had trouble with wrestlers, yes, but he's quite a bit bigger than Cormier, and his reach and boxing will give him an advantage in the standup. Cormier will have to be careful to avoid submissions and knees in the clinch to win this, but I still see Cormier as a slight favorite. Will prob throw money on Mir though, because I bet the betting odds will be unbalanced in this one.

I think this is a great idea on Zuffa's part: Mir is a legit. top 10 HW that can provide a good test to see if DC really has what it takes to compete with UFC level competition, but Mir also bolsters the SF brand with his presence as a former UFC champ.I think it would be really cool for Zuffa to send more of their former champs and veteran fighters over to SF to put on some awesome main event fights.

The SF HW division is getting folded. This should be the last SF HW fight.
