Fertitta: Mir to Strikeforce crossover a 'one time thing'

by Brett Okamoto | source: espn.com

A promotional crossover fight between longtime UFC heavyweight Frank Mir and Strikeforce Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier is a "one-time situation," not a sign of things to come, according to UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta.

Mir, a former champion, will meet Cormier under the Strikeforce banner on Showtime in October. It marks the first time a major draw for the UFC will cross over since Zuffa, parent company of the UFC, acquired Strikeforce in March 2011.

Several Strikeforce champions, including lightweight Gilbert Melendez and middleweight Luke Rockhold, have long requested fights opposite UFC talent.

In an interview with ESPN.com, Fertitta stated that fans shouldn't expect that to happen.

"You're not going to see more of it," Fertitta said. "This is a one-time situation."

The unique state of the Strikeforce heavyweight division stands as the major reason the crossover fight was booked.

I think this means because they are bringing Cormier over to UFC after this fight. They arent going to bring over fights for Melendez or ROckhold when they are going to be stuck on Showtime

I really don't understand why anyone would think Sylvia is a title contender. Not in strikeforce, def not in the UFC, maybe KOC but even than its a stretch

the SF deal ends this march unless it's extended.  ZUffa is waiting for fox to step up and re-work the deal and if they do Lorenzo will fold SF up like a cheap suit and absorb the fighters into the ufc.

Yes he lost a couple he shouldnt have ever lost but sometimes thats the way the cookie crumbles...Hes still competant, has skillz, a chin and desire so it shoulda been tim

no but im sure zuffa wanted to be diplomatic about it and make sure fox knows it's happening...  Fox and Zuffa are in a 7 year deal...  fox could bury the ufc if it wanted to... Zuffa is letting fox know that they can move their marketable ufc fighters to SF as leverage.
