Griffin vs. Sonnen booked for UFC 155

by Damon Martin | source: UFC Tonight

Sonnen co-hosted UFC Tonight on Tuesday evening and announced that he would be returning to 205lbs to face former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin in December.

“I’ve watched him win the world championship, I’ve watched him etch his name in stone as a guaranteed future Hall of Famer, you and I and the whole world together watched him be a large part of creating and changing the industry that we have today. He’s one guy Jon Jones hasn’t fought, he’s beat two world champions in his last three outings, and on December 29th I will be taking on Forrest Griffin,” Sonnen stated.

The bout between Sonnen and Griffin is actually a rematch of a fight the two had back in 2003 during the famous IFC Global Domination tournament. Griffin submitted Sonnen with a triangle choke in the one-night tournament, which Renato ‘Babalu’ Sobral eventually won.

Do you people realise that you're getting to watch people fight? We can sit on our asses and watch other grown men FIGHT- that is awesome. You're all silly gooses.

Dana just tossed Sonnen a softball and if he knocks it out of the park, he's likely earned himself the next #1 contender slot. Would be a hell of a story if Hendo beats Jones and Machida and then faces one of his best friends and training partners in what would be close to his last fight.

Dana is testing the waters here with a total TRT bout. He is looking to roll out an all roid league in 2013.

Not interested in this at all.Someone said it's very important for winner. Why? What is it going to do for them? Is it going to get them a title shot? Is it fuck. The only way both men will win, will be via the judges. Forrest wins by decision and people will say he beat up someone 20lbs lighter. Sonnen wins by decision and people will say he beat up someone way past their best and not interested in the fight game anymore, someone whose own boss says he should retire. There is much more to lose than to win for both fighters which is rare and a result of stupidity in the match making department.Sonnen vs a lot of other fighters at 205 made more sense. Obvious one is Wand, but I get the feeling he has one fight left (as Dana said they came to an "understanding"), which will be a winnable one, and when he does win it he'll retire. Sonnen would wrestlefuck him for 15 minutes so that won't happen.Sonnen vs Franklin would have been ok. Sonnen has talked some shit about him being just a "Math teacher from Ohio"Sonnen vs Rampage would have been great for obvious reasons.Sonnen vs any of the Brazilians at 205 would have been great. But instead we get Sonnen vs Griffin. Great.

Chael will destroy him now.  That IFC tourney was a long time ago and he was 90% just a wrestler.  Chael's right, Forrest is unathletic, but he's a good fighter and can dig deep when he wants.  Forrest started with jits, so it's always dangerous, especially his triangles.   I like Forrest, he just acts like he doesn't want to be there.  Maybe the Silva fight affected him a lot, but shit, tons of people have gotten pawned by Silva. There's not much consolence in that, but take it for what it is.
