Rousey defends title, submits Kaufman in less than a minute

by Mike Chiappetta | source:

"Rousey by armbar."

The three words are quickly becoming a significant entry in the MMA lexicon. The move itself has become so dominant that it's more about when than about if it is coming.

After Saturday night's Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman main event, it's six fights, six first-round armbar submissions by the bantamweight champion, who pulled off the trick in just 54 seconds this time.

Ronda Rousey's latest victim was Sarah Kaufman, a former champion who had been beaten just once in 16 career fights.

Rousey scored a takedown inside of the first 20 seconds and immediately attacked with the armbar. Kaufman defended the initial surge, but Rousey had latched on and wasn't going to let go until she had it. The two played tug of war for what must have seemed like an eternity for Kaufman, but in reality landed just around 20 seconds. And finally, Rousey won, locking out her hips and hyperextending Kaufman's elbow, and the challenger was forced to tap.

I agree completely.  I would expand even further and say her stand up looked better than Kaufman.  She came out super agressive with 3 jabs and believe landed 2 of them.  Then threw a 1-2 and landed the cross.  By that time had her right up against the fence and clinched her.  It was all over from there.  Made Kaufmans stand up look bad actually.  Kaufman should have been circling while defending the punches.  So in the small amount of stand up that was in the fight Ronda got the better of Sarah.   Don't see how anyone can pick holes in that performance at all.  It was a flawless victory.  Sarah did not have the chance to even throw one punch.

She is an Olympic level judoka, why are you surprised? If an olympic wrestler was able to take down most people they fight without a problem no one would be saying shit.

Sarah definitely had that deer in the headlights look on her face. Rousey looked like a shark, as always. And with Rousey's new striking ability, I don't see Mr.Cyborg winning that fight. Feminine little Gina gave Mr.Cyborg a battle, Ronda will win.

I think you could ask any BJJ practitioner that has tried judo how easy it is to learn how to toss people around. Nick could start now and at judo, with judo rules, he will never be as good as Rousey.

I think he was referring to her judo game overall (ground plus throws) not just throws.

Agreed.Willing to bet that any pro fighter, male or female, knows how to defend an armbar. Doesnt mean that you're going to against Honda. Im sure they've been taught how to defend a hip toss as well. On another note, it appeared Kauffman was not too aware of the kouchi-gari(leg trip) combo that is commmonly done with the hip toss. Perhaps Honda is just too strong and just had her way too much.
