Is Rousey good, bad, or both for MMA?

by Trent Reinsmith | source: bleacherreport.com

I could go all Joe Rogan on you and claim that Ronda Rousey is a monster, but I’ll resist. However, I will say this, Ronda Rousey is both good and bad for women’s MMA.

Now, before you tear that notion apart, hear me out on this one. I do have a point to make, I’m not just throwing this theory out there without some thought.

Rousey has fought nine times in her MMA career, six as a professional and three as an amateur, and she has finished each of those nine fights by slapping on an armbar and submitting her opponent within the first round.

At this point everyone knows her game plan. Everyone knows the one move they have to defend against and yet they are powerless to do so.

So, why is Rousey both good and bad for the sport?

Rousey’s run will generate interest in WMMA. It’s probably not unfair to say that much like Royce Gracie’s run during the early days of the UFC inspired many to train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Rousey’s dominance will inspire many younger women to train in MMA and that’s great. The more women involved, the more the sport will progress.

Great article but I'm not sure that the following would be true: "The other possible drawback is that her dominance could actually result in fewer eyes on the fights after a while. If everyone knows what the outcome may be, are they going to “waste” their time sitting around on Saturday nights to watch under a minute of action?" Mike Tyson in his heyday brought millions of new viewers to the sport just to watch matches that they knew weren't going to get out of the first round. Although the result was almost guaranteed, there is always the "how and when". It's a lot more entertaining than watching 2 unexciting fighters going to a decision.

I would argue the fact that people are so worried about Ronda's arm bar, thinking and worrying about avoiding it throws them off their game. If you spend your time in training and the fight worrying completely about what your opp. will do, you both fail to do what YOU want to do and let your opp. do whatever they try to do.In the fight Saturday night, Ronda controlled everything in that fight. Took her down, mounted, threw GnP, and sunk in that arm bar.IMO it's the same way people get thrown off their game by Jon Jones reach. Everyone knows Jon likes to use his reach, but everyone worries so much about it it allows Jon to do whatever he wants. Even Rashad knew what he had to do to win, but in the end let Jones stay at range and do his thing.

The thing about Gina is, that she is a kickboxer, not a Mixed Martial Artist. That's why Cyborg was able to beat her so bad that she gave up the sport. She's a pretty face and she made it on her pretty face, up to a point, in MMA.Cyborg is the real deal, she has the dominance but lack the sexuality teen boys have wet dreams about. Ronda has glamor and skills, but whether she can be dominant after only 5 fights is still in the air. It's not in her best interest to challenge Cyborg, or maybe it is because she is only challenging her to drop down to her weight, when eveyrone knows Cyborg can hardly make her own weight.

Before they started letting women fight in MMA (because they let them do Thai Boxing and boxing first), I was in my first Jiu Jitsu class some years ago. I will say that the girls in that gym were hot! I don't know what it is about about this sport but the women almost always have hot bods.

A bit of both. Her dominance is good for WMMA but her attitude will eventually turn people against her.
