Cyborg: Won't endanger health over 'rantings of spoiled little girl'

Cris Cyborg Sent the following statement to the reporter Aaron Tru recently. The former 145lbs Strikeforce Champion answers questions about facing Ronda Rousey, her weight, and insists that Rousey is merely trying to “delude” the fans by acting as if she could defeat her.

“I get many questions about Rhonda Rousey, and I would like to set the record straight for the last time, as I do not consider her much personally, much less as a fighter.

She claims she is the “Champion” and openly challenges me to fight at 135lbs. (She competed in the Beijing Olympics at 70kg/154lbs, and fought at 145lbs in MMA till she learned she would have to fight me, and then dropped to 135lbs.) Which I find laughable. I have never fought below 145lbs, and I am considered the pound for pond top women fighter in the WORLD! I have yet to lose a fight while holding the Strikeforce 145lbs title. My last fight was considered a no contest, but that has NOT changed the fact that I AM the women’s 145lbs CHAMPION.

There really is NOT a safe way for me to cut to 135lbs, not without hurting myself physically. (I am less than 8% body fat at 145lbs.) And my cardiologist and physician have advised me that to make such a drastic reduction in weight could have permanent effects in my long term health. And I will not endanger my health to satisfy the rantings of a spoiled little girl who has yet to prove that she can truly compete at my level, at a weight she has not only fought at before but has been awarded an Olympic medal!

So to put this issue to rest, if Rhonda is the future of WMMA, and is the “Champion” that she envisions….you know where I am, and I am more than willing to give you an opportunity to test me. I WILL fight you at 145lbs, (you know…the weight that you started at), and then you can have 2 belts, and prove to everyone that you are indeed a “Champion”.

If not, stay at 135lbs and continue to delude yourself and your fans that you can beat me. Your really not worth my time otherwise. I will do all of my talking in the ring, until then your really not worth my breath.”

In a November interview with Tatame, Santos said a drop to 135 was not impossible.

Eduardo Ferreira: There two divisions and they want to unify it to a single female division. In that case you’d have to lose a lot of weight. How do you see it?

Cris Cyborg: Actually there’re still two weight divisions: 135lbs and 145lbs. It’s already hard for me to drop to 145lbs, I gotta work a lot and they’re thinking about one division only, they asked me if I could do it. I can try, it’s not impossible. Let’s see... I guess that, in the future, there’ll be some news.

EF: It’d be good for you to have more opponents to fight against, right?

CC: It’ll be hard because I got a lot of weight to lose, but it’d be good because I could fight more. I guess it’s important to keep active, it’s my job, so I’ll try it to stay here.

Permanent effects of long term health??So does steroids.

Haha, yeah I was about to say the same thing. A woman pumping herself with steroids is not dangerous at all, but cutting to the weight class below her normal one is? C'mon now.

"And my cardiologist and physician have advised me that to make such a drastic reduction in weight could have permanent effects in my long term health. And I will not endanger my health"So cutting 10 additional lbs "a drastic reduction in weight" could have "permanent effects in my long term health", but using steroids or any PED's aren't a problem? Where's the logic there? Seems like more of a choice to me, she does what she wants to do as it suits her and uses a Physicians excuse to avoid doing what she doesn't want to do. I don't think any of this really has anything to do with Ronda, it's all about Cyborg trying to remain relevant while serving a suspension for cheating. Just how it seems to me.

The fight should happen at catch weight 140. 5 lbs won't make a significant difference if Ronda is really SO much better than Cyborg, and Cyborg can find a way to make 140. Perhaps dehydrate and take a dump before the weigh in. Imagine the donkey chokers that lady can drop. It could easily amount to 4-6 lbs.In all seriousness, though, they should fight at 140. Cyborg will likely win this one, but I'd prefer it if Ronda did.

And all this time I thought she dropped to 135 because the 145 champ got busted and stripped of her title, leaving no big challenges at that weight while the 135 class was putting on exciting fights with the belt changing hands fairly often..I guess I must have overlooked the 145 womens division. Did they have already have a fight to fill the vacant title?

Doesn't really matter... No way Cyborg could stop Ronda's takedowns, and she would be screwed once it hit the ground. Frankly Cyborg is lucky that Ronda doesn't want to come back to 145lbs and take that belt too. Saying that Cyborg can't back off on the muscle a bit and make 135lbs is crazy. She could do it if she really wanted to. Staying in a heavier division w/less competition, and an unfare advantage (As testing or anyone with eyesight has seen...) is much easier than facing a legit competitor. Cyborg saying Ronda has accomplished nothing is a joke. Compared to what? Last time I checked Ronda had a much more accomplished record than Cyborg to say the least. Cyborgs record is tarnished and will forever have a nice * next to it. Can't say the same for Rousey.

Her saying Rousey has done nothing, is basically saying "she" "herself' has done nothing. They both won SF titles, and I am pretty sure Cyborg did not have very many more fights than Rousey when she won the belt. Only difference is Rousey is a clean fighter, and Cyborg cheated her way to the top.

This is ridiculous. Technique beat sterioids and size back at UFC 1. Now its a different sport and anyone going against a doper with a signficant weight advantage risks a permanent end to their career or worse. You want to see dishonesty and science experiments? Go watch pro wrestling.
