The Complete UFC Lightweight Division – A Timeline Perspective

Recently, at UFC 150 in Denver, Frankie Edgar and Benson Henderson fought five hard rounds for the lightweight championship.  Though many fans and media believed that Edgar won the majority of the rounds, Henderson won a split decision and retained the belt.  Normally, after a fight that was this closely contested, we would expect a rematch.  However, this was already a rematch for Edgar and Henderson, and prior to that Edgar had just had two other consecutive title fights with rematches vs. BJ Penn and Gray Maynard.  That means that since Edgar and Penn first fought, at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi in April of 2010, only four fighters have been involved in competing for the UFC lightweight championship.  In what may be the UFC’s most competitive and deepest division, it seems like it’s time to get some other fighters involved in a shot at the title.  Thus, Dana White has named Nate Diaz as Henderson’s next opponent.

Since the UFC lightweight division is so complex and currently has over sixty fighters, I’ve created the timeline below to give you a sense of who the current UFC lightweights are, when they entered the promotion, and how they’ve fared.  All the data I’ve organized comes from UFC.com.
