Jon Jones: Brother Arthur could be UFC champ, Chandler not so much

by Jeff Wagenheim | source:

Tom Brady was pretty pumped that the Patriots traded up six spots in the NFL draft back in April and grabbed Chandler Jones. The seven-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time Super Bowl champion is a fan of the rookie's brother.

Jon "Bones" Jones will be a Patriots fan when Chandler and the defense are on the field. But when the offense has the ball, Jon will be cheering on a Baltimore D that, like New England's, features a certain exterior lineman named Jones. Arthur Jones, that is, a 26-year-old in his third year with the Ravens, and the older brother of Jon, 25, and Chandler, 22.

What has Jon Jones' head spinning is that, one day removed from a brain-scrambling cage fight, he will be required to pay closer attention to a football game than perhaps ever before.

"I don't necessarily want a 0-0 game," said Jon Jones. "I definitely want one of my brothers to win, and I'm interested in who has the better individual game -- more tackles, more sacks. Arthur and Chandler are very competitive. They're best friends, so they're competitive in a good way. But whoever does better Sunday night will definitely roast the other. I'm going to enjoy that."

Did Jon have what it takes to keep up with the other Joneses in football?

"I absolutely sucked," said the fighter. "I was terrible at football. I didn't remember the plays, so I would line up at defensive end and just try to get through the line. I'd be doing swim moves on running plays. I was just terrible."

Arthur has spent part of the last couple of NFL offseasons training in MMA alongside his brother the UFC champ. "Arthur has a tremendous amount of potential in martial arts," said Jon. "He has phenomenal wrestling skills, he's a fast learner, he has a great work ethic. I just think he's a natural fighter."

Football is "Arthur's passion in life," said Jon Jones. But if that career were to end up as a dead end, said Jon, "Arthur wouldn't hesitate to pursue mixed martial arts."

Arthur Jones is listed on the Ravens roster at 310 pounds. "The dedication that it would take for him to get down to the 265 heavyweight limit," said Jon, " I think it would transform him mentally into the warrior he needs to be to compete at a high level. And he would be faster than ever and mentally a stronger person. I think he would make a great contender, if not champion, in the UFC."

Chandler, too? "Nah," said Jon Jones, "Chandler's not a fighter, other than when we play slap boxing games in our mom's and dad's backyard."

He hardly called him fat. Those players have to carry weight to compete, but, they're still ridiculously fast and agile. Check out Brock's combine numbers. He was 300+lbs and putting up insane numbers. Jumping higher than a lot of NBA players, and sprinting faster than a lot of track stars.Unfortunately when those guys retire, they tend to die very young. They eat soooo much to keep that muscle and the extra weight, and when they stop training constantly they just balloon. It would add decades to Jones' brothers' life to leave Football and fight in MMA.

LOLWTFPICS, You are giving yourself far too much credit and putting way too much stock into how serious I take this thing.I have certainly posted in more than 9 Jones threads, for sure...but seeing as how he has been fighting at the top level of the sport I follow the most for a couple of years now, I'm not sure how that truly matters. He has certainly been worthy of many threads and posts in his career.I'll go ahead and take you at your word that you have only posted in 9 Jones related threads. Great job.I don't root for Jones, and don't much care for the guy, sort of like how I dislike the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Detroit Redwings etc. but it's not any more serious than that. Either way your whole "Another man controls your emotions" is a mellodramatic and off-base assesment. You were the one coming into the thread defending him from attacks that havent even been made yet.

Exactly...of course you have the unintelligent posters like doomfarmer who are attracted to "Jones" in a thread title like flies to shit so it's no surprise he was one of the first on the scene. You can bet he's trying to google something Jones said and just hoping and praying he somehow contradicted himself. It's weird that some do that. If I don't like a fighter and I see a thread about him I skip over it. It's like some of these sorry individuals just can't stop themselves. It's sad actually. I'm going to leave him alone now as I see he was starting to get worked up on his last post.

Take a deep breath sweetcheeks. It's only the internet. For shits and giggles, I checked my subscriptions and have posted on only 9 Jon Jones threads ever and they only go back the past 11 days, and this is easily verifiable. Can you say the same? Have you posted on 9 or less Jones threads since this debacle started? I'd venture to bet you've whined on at least 9 threads today alone.

I'm sure Jon rooting for both teams will confirm everything you listed nicely."He said he was rooting for the Patriots, but now he's rooting for the Ravens.""Holy shit, he switched again. That's like the 10th time this game. How can the Ravens trust that Jon really wants them to win? What a phony."
