Soares: Bonnar qualifications to fight Anderson Silva 'irrelevant'

source: mmainterviews

When a car hit Jose Aldo, knocking him out of the main event vs. Frankie Edgar at UFC 153, UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva stepped up on short notice. UFC 152, which is scheduled for Oct. 13, 2012 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, needs a major Brazilian star as a headliner. With that secured, the search was on for an opponent.

Stephan Bonnar stepped up, but many fans questioned whether it made sense.

In an interview with Silva's manager Ed Soares, he explained that it doesn't matter if it makes sense - in this life, sometimes you play the hand that is dealt you.

"I think it was just a matter of who was available at 205," said Soares. "We kind of went through a process of elimination. There were only a certain number of opponents willing to take the fight and Stephan ended being the one that stuck.

"Stephan is a warrior. People can say what they want, does he deserve it, it's really irrelevant. We were trying to find a solution to a problem and Stephan Bonnar stepped up and took the fight.

"No one can underestimate what Stephan's done. The guy's constantly moving forward, he's not an easy guy to finish. It's going to be an action-packed fight, for sure."

i honestly don't think AS is going to defend his MW title again, unless it's for a GSP superfight. while i respect his willingness to fight bigger opponenets, if he'll fight Bonnar, why not JBJ? it seems like a weird way to prolong the amount of time he holds his title...

It could not have been for the MW title on that short of notice. Not possible so speculation on it is wasted time and effort...   By the time Anderson IS going to defend the title we will have a clearer picture of who should get the shot. Right now I feel that Weidman/Boetsch/Bisping all have a good claim to being the most deserving but it is not clear. Zuffa agrees based on what they have said/done. Zuffa wants the GSP superfight and are waiting for Condit/GSP to happen.

if it was for the MW title they'd have had the same reaction when bisping was thrown at them in a hypothetical scenario.  "oh sure, he good...I fight heeem"  oh well at least we can agree on hunting

@time travel my connection to JBJ was simply because they contradict themselves.  to be fair to Jon, he usually doesn't try to discourage matchups like soares / andy and has fought much tougher opponents than andy.  i just wish the andy camp would stop giving a thumbs up or down to opponents and happily fight anyone dana gives them. it's not much to ask

If two top boring contenders were to face off in a main event, everyone would complain that they aren't paying to see it.Two wickedly exciting fighters are in the main event, a chance for a knockout of the year candidate or even upset of the century in an "irrelevant" fight, people are complaining that they won't pay to see it.This is a borderline ridiculous mismatch for sure, but unfortunately for all the ungrateful fans we can't have a GSP/Anderson super fight headlining each month, especially on short notice.I'll pay just for Big Nog, but I'm certainly going to enjoy the main event too.

except that this is the exact opposite of the JBJ reaction. JBJ made his decision disregarding the circumstances. He said I'm not going to fight on that short a notice. Even though 1. it was with a far easier opponent, 2. it would have made more money, and 3. not fighting would have cancelled the card.I'm not sure why you guys are so salty about this. Obviously a fighter isn't going to require as long a fight camp against a weaker opponent that was put in as an emergency. Circumstances, how do they work?

^^ chaplins house (why is the quote feature on this site always broken?)Well yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying. The circumstances dictate how they're going to react to things. So it's kind of short sighted to be like "Oh hey they said all these guys weren't worthy but Bonnar is?!" Well no, that's not what they're saying at all. It's using almost kindergarten logic to consider it like that.

Those ring girls at the end were HOT AS FUCK!!!   The girl talking has an annoying voice but only after you've heard her say the same phrase about 7 times consecutively......because I kept on rewinding the vid watching each girl one by one. 1st,2nd, and 4th girl are the hottest.
