Through 12 fights and four title defenses, Jon Jones has made a pretty strong case that he’s close to cleaning out the list of contenders at 205.
However, Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier has hinted around at dropping down to 205 once his final bout is finished with Zuffa’s sister promotion. His target would be none other than Jon Jones.
The fight is anything but official and at this stage of the game only a fantasy bout for fans to theorize about, but UFC President Dana White gets a big smile on his face whenever this potential powder keg title fight comes up.
“That’d be interesting,” White said with a smirk when asked about a potential Jones vs. Cormier fight. “I like it."
White has stated that he will never pressure a fighter to move weight classes outside of stating an opinion, but he knows if Daniel Cormier could make the move down to light heavyweight, he would be a force immediately.
DC, Texeira, Gustaffson and Mousasi are all that's left for Jones and likely at least one of those guys will end up losing to another long before they get booked to fight for the belt.
No he wont.Jones wont take the risk of sticking out his legs anywhere near where cormier can grab them. Jones is going to rely on his hands and footwork the most to win this fight, playing his usual distance game. But Cormier is such a little speedy guy that he can get low and explode in to jones's range easily and grab a hold of him. The level of wrestling, clinch and dirty boxing that cormier showed us a huge threat to Jones. This is seriously Jones biggest challenge to date. Cormier can win.
I have very little interest in seeing Cormier fight anyone at this point. His fight against Staring was shit, his fight against Mir was shit, he's 34 years old, someone fill me in please, I don't get it. So what, he beat a way over the hill Barnett who himself hasn't beaten anyone with relevance since Big Nog in 2006. I don't get it.
It takes a special type of fool to compare Cormier's strategy against a 260lb heavyweight with the best submissions in the division with a lanky 205 lber who relies on his wrestling to control his fights. Completely different animals.
Jones ignores guys like Gustaffson and focuses on middleweights...why shouldn't Dana?
The real question is...will Jones take a third middleweight fight in a row and fight Anderson Silva?
Dumb question I know...Jones would never take a middleweight fight that he didn't have a 95% chance of winning!
Silly me...
Why not give another fighter a shot at the LHW belt without winning a fight at LHW. Whatever you do Dana, keep ignoring guys like Gustaffson who've won 5 in a row.
