Mitrione explains why he turned down Cormier bout

by Steph Daniels | source:

Stephie Daniels: In your own words, why did you turn down the fight with Daniel Cormier?

Matt Mitrione: First, I want to thank Dana White and Joe Silva for even offering that fight. It was an honor to get that call, and I would love to fight Daniel Cormier, but I'm just not ready right now. He has Olympic level wrestling, and although I have spent a great deal of time working on my wresting, I don't feel it would be my best fight back after such a long layoff. UFC worked hard to get me a fight this year, but my old opponent had visa issues and it caused additional time out of the cage. Wrestling is, by far, my weakest skill. I'm working hard on my wrestling, but it would be a huge weakness against me in a short notice fight against Cormier.

Stephie Daniels: Does the fact that this fight would have been in Strikeforce, which is noticeably deteriorating at a rapid rate, have anything to do with your choice to not fight Cormier?

Matt Mitrione: Not at all, if I thought I was ready for Cormier, I would fight him in Strikeforce or the UFC, or wherever.

What a bunch of horse shit. "I respect his honesty" "Good for meathead" blah blah blah. No less than a few weeks ago Mitrione was all over the net and television talking about how he wanted to fight sooner than later, calling out Jon Jones and all his other media whoring bullshit. Dana called his bluff and he dick tucked faster than a Thai ladyboy. Cormier has looked impressive, but comparing him to the likes of Anderson or Fedor is fucking stupid. Sure Mitrione would have went into that fight as an underdog, but not like Vitor was against JBJ or like Bonnar will be against AS. DC is a great wrestler but he's only used it to keep fights standing for the most part. He would have been more than willing to stand with Matt. Anything could've happened and with Matt's reach would make it a much more interesting fight. Giving him a pass or respecting him for turning down this fight for fear of losing is a fucking joke. If I was Dana and that was his excuse for turning down this fight I would have cut his ass immediately. Matt is no spring chicken and the fighter that he is now is pretty much the fighter he's going to be. This motherfucker got taken down my Kongo, his wrestling isn't gonna get any better. His best bet would have been to take the fight, get in the good graces of the DW, and do his best to make the fight competitive. If he loses to DeFries, I have a strong feeling DW is gonna cut him. Matt is not in a position to pick and choose his opponents. Fighting DC would've meant more to his career than beating DeFries. I for one believe if he loses his next fight, he's gone and rightfully so. Matt fucked up, a lot of guys in his position would have taken advantage of this opportunity.

He should just say this is a horrible matchup and stop with the short notice lame positioning. As others have said, the notice isnt changing a thing on the wrestling disadvantage, and there is no credibility for anyone to say that.

its easy to type how much of a no brainer taking the dc fight is but when you go into a fight on short notice knowing you only have a punchers chance at best and the most likely outcome for you involves stitches and a medical suspension its alot harder im sure

If "wrecked" means getting "Godfathered" for 25 minutes then I suppose he might have gotten wrecked.

Would've been interesting to see him fight Cormier. He would've very likely lost, but would've been interesting nonetheless.

Don't want to hear it. Fighters are fighters. They get paid to fight. There is NO excuse for turning a fight down. That's it.

Matt made the right call. This isn't a good fight for him. Punchers chance at best.

Never really liked Mitrione, but I respect that honesty.
