UFC's White: There's nothing wrong with having a fun fight

by Matt Erickson | source: mmajunkie.com

"You're absolutely, 100 percent right (that it's OK to have fun fights sometimes)," White told MMAjunkie.com. "The fact that the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world steps up and says, 'Somebody's hurt? I'm in'? Second time he's done it, too – he came in late after i'd already canceled the Jones fight. It's weird (fans are down on it)."

But White also believes that despite odds as high as 14-to-1 in favor of Silva, the pieces are in place for a Bonnar upset. The UFC boss believes Bonnar's career has been a good one – but that the runner-up from Season 1 of "The Ultimate Fighter" still hasn't had that one fight to put him over the top from mere fan favorite to superstar.

"Bonnar is vowing to shock the world," White said. "It's one of those deals, you wanna talk about a Rocky story – this is a Rocky story right here. This means everything in the world to this guy that he's getting this fight. He's been on this (three)-fight win streak and felt like there was nothing there for him – like he feels his career is winding down, and he hasn't had his moment.

"He had it with Forrest (Griffin) and lost that thing by this much, and now he's getting this opportunity. It's going to be interesting to see what Bonnar does, but I agree with you 100 percent – there's nothing wrong with having a fun fight."

Rashad would have a lot of "fun fights" at 185 - vs. Palhares, Lombard, etc.

Its a shitty fight. Yes it will be entertaining but to have you champion fight in a different division against a guy who is not top five in that division is a waste of talent and a very strange move.   Either Silva should move up to light heavyweight permanently and get top level guys (this fight would make sense if they will actually be able to make Jon Jones Silva fight in the future\) or he should just fight the top level guys in his division.   A superfight between GSP and Silva would be nice as well but really a rather daunting proposition (too...he probably will not take it) for GSP.   Anyways we will all be modically entertained but it really does not show of the essense of what the UFC or Zuffa stand (competitive fights where something is really on the line).   Dont begrudge Bonnar for taking the fight but it is not helping MMA in general nor the UFC in particular.

If the UFC truly cared about making fun fights for the fans, Then they would have made the fights the UG has been begging forBut no, they give us Anderson vs Bonnar instead...

hopefully he can carry this mentality to make Anderson vs Nick Diaz. Two highly skilled punchers throwing down. What could be more fun than that?!

But it as stupid to complain about that fight and a dickhead move to make fun of Cody. Not cool.

I guess because of Cody's inexperience and recent success, it was tough to see where he would stand against a guy like Mendes. But with Stephan, he has been around for years and he's been in some wars against tough guys. Skill wise though, it is pretty mismatched. But there plenty of guys thought to give Anderson problems and turned out to be mismatches.

This. I used to dislike Anderson, but I have learned to appreciate his greatness. And as much as I hate Jon Jones, I don't think I could appreciate his skills the same way, ever. Anderson is truly gifted, and if he says he can fight a few more years, that's great, cage wise he isn't too old, hasn't taken a lot of damage like most guys.

I think people confuse pre-surgery HMC with post-surgery HMC. Pre was a beast. I'd take him over Bonnar.
