Jones, Sonnen to coach TUF, fight April 27th

by Lance Pugmire | source:

UFC President Dana White told The Times on Tuesday that Jones and Sonnen have been assigned as opposing coaches in the third installment of "The Ultimate Fighter" on FX, creating some extensive pre-fight hype for their April 27 pay-per-view title match at a site to be determined.

"The Ultimate Fighter" with Jones and Sonnen is set to begin shooting on Oct. 29 in Las Vegas, with a debut in early January as young middleweights participate in a tournament that leads up to an April "TUF" finale at the Vegas Hard Rock Hotel, where the winner will receive a multi-fight UFC contract.

"This should be a good one," White said of matching arguably his organization’s best fighter against its top personality. "Jon has accepted the fight. He knows the fans want to see that fight."

This could be one of the most watched seasons and entertaining. I hope it doesnt take away from the 185 talent thats coming in, much like the rampage vs evans season, which i think they could have had better fighters on that season. Agree or disagree this fight will put people in the seats and i believe Chael will be the first one to take Jones down.

It's ridiculous how people hold Machida/Shogun not accepting a 8 days notice fight with Jones against them. They already fought Jones on short notie and lost badly. They don't want to go 0-2 and be in limbo just to be Dana's personal bitch. Chael obviously accepted the fight because he had nothing to lose, he doesn't even have a single win at LHW in recent years.

As obvious as this is just a marketing strategy, I am okay with this. This gives the top 205'ers six months to sort themselves out and stack up some wins. But with that said, I also never want to hear Dana say that the UFC champions only fight the best. I always heard discouraging things from Dana and the Zuffombies about Pride giving their champions 'gimme' fights. Well... pot meat kettle.

He would be referring to the other potential contenders mentioned by other posters, in order:Gustafsson - beat Silva;Machida - declined the 151 fight;Shogun - beat Vera;Glover - beat Maldonado.
