Seven fighters turned down bout with Spong

by Damon Martin | source: mmaweekly.com

Some have criticized the fight as mismatched despite Spong having no actual MMA experience (he did have over 100 kickboxing bouts however). In reality, any fighter with more than a 0-0 record in MMA would have been a likely candidate for Spong in his debut, but Bartlett was the man who accepted after seven other, more experience candidates said “no thanks” when approached with the offer to face the Dutch striker.

World Series of Fighting vice president and matchmaker Ali Abdel-Aziz confirmed with MMAWeekly.com that seven different opponents were approached and offered the fight with Spong, and all seven turned down the opportunity until Bartlett was the one who finally said yes.

One name that was confirmed among the list was former UFC light heavyweight Houston Alexander, and Abdel-Aziz said several other recognizable names made up the list of fighters who didn’t want to be Spong’s first test inside the cage.

Not to mention yvel pulled out of Rfa the night before wsof. So clearly he wouldn't have been able to take the fight.

Yvel and Spong are related.  Doubt that would ever happen.

Why overextend your payroll for an initial event for an OPPONENT for a kickboxer who isn't even a name?Makes zero business sense. Hardcore fans watched to see Spong make his debut. They weren't tuning in to see him get wrestled down and beaten in his first bout. So, why pay more for a guy to possibly beat Spong and render him USELESS on a future show?Again, zero benefit. Pavia, explain to me how a different foe for Spong draws more viewers or sells more tickets for WSOF 1. Go ahead. I'll explain to you how increasing payroll for an initial event is foolish and risking a Spong loss which renders him broken for a second event at his rate of pay is nearly Affliction level thinking. Should you intentionally "feed" Spong?Maybe not but the guy is less known than Hector Lombard to MOST fans and I think risking a Boetsch-Lombard is insane. Increased payroll without increased ticket sales, viewership ratings or potential for selling Spong on WSOF 2 makes no sense. And you are in business?Stick to grabbing models off Facebook.

Bartlett is a bad dude. It goes to show how good Spong is. I'd fight Spong for the right money.
