Last month's UFC 153 event took place in Brazil, which is without an athletic commission. Regulatory duties were handled by former Executive Director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission and current UFC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner.

All 24 fighters on the card were tested by an independent agency, for both recreational and performance enhancing drugs. Two failed the screen: Stephan Bonnar, who tested positive for the anabolic steroid Drostanolone, and Dave Herman, for marijuana metabolites.

Both fighters admitted to taking the banned substances.

On Tuesday, Ratner suspended Bonnar for a year, until Oct. 13, 2013. In announcing the suspension for Bonnar, Ratner said that Herman would be treated less harshly.

"We feel very strongly that there's a big difference between PEDs and marijuana," said Ratner. "We think the commissions do a good job with PEDs, but we think with marijuana there should be some form of rehab involved, going through that kind of process and learning about it."

Today Ratner announced how Herman's penalty.

The UFC has suspended the heavyweight  Dave Herman for six months. Additionally, Herman has agreed to participate in an approved drug-rehabilitation program.

In addition to the suspension and rehabilitation program, Herman must have a clean drug test in order to fight once his suspension ends.

Herman's future with the UFC could be in jeopardy regardless of the failed test and suspension. The fighter, after opening his UFC career with a "Fight of the Night" win over John-Olav Einemo, has lost three straight – all by stoppage.

CSAC was asking Barnett if he'd gone to rehab when he had that quickly adjourned (to a later date) re-licensure hearing that was more than he expected...and they seemed to be suggesting it, which blew my mind. Telling a pro athlete to go to rehab for either of such substance is ridiculous.

It was awesome seeing Nogueira submit him after the stuff he said though.

I found myself in the Innervisions recovery houses for several months twenty years ago here in Vancouver and we did have a goofy kid come in for his 'pot problem'. He didn't stay long and no one did take him seriously. He was just a messed up kid I guess but addiction wasn't his problem.

Pretty much. The "rehab" is not going to be some crazy inpatient deal where they are climbing the walls an institution. It will be a short program of periodic meetings where he is "educated" on the negative effects of marijuana, then gets a paper signed and walks away. Big deal. believe it or not folks, this is what progress should look like.

It's a hell of a lot better than a 9 mos to a year and a huge % of the purse. I'd take outpatient rehab, which amounts to going to a few meetings, any day over that.

Did you guys not see his last fight? He was inches away from sitting on a couch eating Doritos in his underwear. If it's not impacting his job then smoke all he wants, but if it affecting his job (and it sure as fuck looked to me like it did) then he needs help.
