Gil Melendez continuing shoulder issue pushes him off Strikeforce finale

source: tatame

Strikeforce's grand finale is apparently going to be short one title, as Tatame is reporting that Gil Melendez has pulled out of the Jan show, and will presumably appear in the UFC as soon as he is capable.

Melendez suffered a shoulder injury in training that forced him out of a scheduled September 29 fight against Pat Healy. At the time it was reported that he would not need surgery, and the fight was rescheduled to Jan.

Strikeforce lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez will not be on the last card of the event, to be held in January. The information comes from  Melendez's coach Cesar Gracie, who confirmedd the cancellation of the fight against Pat Healy.

"They have not made official, but Gilbert is not training hard," said Gracie. "I think he never recovered from the shoulder injury and will not be able to fight in January. He had a doctor's appointment this week and the doctor said that he will not be able to fight."

"We will focus on his recovery. With the end of the show, he should migrate to the UFC and is set to open as soon as possible, so to recover."

UFC President Dana White offered some confirmation of the injury in an interview with a Montreal newspaper, In response to a question about when Melendez might get a UFC title shot, White responded "From what I'm hearing, and I don't run Strikeforce, Melendez is hurt again."

There are too many good 155's. Regardless who it is, Melendez should fight a top contender before a title shot. I like the winner of Cerrone/Pettis idea doh.

How about Diego Sanchez and Gil? Gil gets a casual name and exposure to the UFC audience and Diego is supposedly going to LW again so why not? It would be a good main card fight on a pay per view and I actually think it would be a great fight.

I will make a SN bet with anybody on this. If Gil gets a top-contender in his first UFC fight, he loses.

Gil is hype too my friend..."Gil would assrape bendo, cerrone, and Pettis." How can anybody take that nonsense seriously? How about Gil gets one single victory in the UFC before we start pretending that he's the best? He's not going to beat Nate, let alone Benson, Frankie could come up light on no notice and handle him easily. Gil is talked up, because he's a not-UFC fighter. Same thing with Eddie. Same thing with Hector. I don't think Gil beats Eddie, and Eddie wasn't even the best in Bellator.

There is a big difference between Lombard and Gil. I think Gil would assrape bendo, cerrone, and Pettis. And I think he'd beat Nate but that fight will never happen. He's probably top 3 in world but lack of fight in s/f keeps him lower in rankings

Huge difference Stonepony since Lombard was ranked by defualt and hype more then the ranked fighters hes faced. Look at Belfort top 10 with only one top 10 win and that was from 4 years ago against Linland.    Regardless Gil has beat top 5-10 opponents and deserves a fight then a title shot.
