Fitch: Maia a 'monster', but I'll overwhelm him

by Josh Gross | source:

"It will be an interesting matchup," Fitch told after verbally agreeing to the fight last week. "I haven't created too much of a game plan but I think I'll overwhelm him with everything that I bring to the table.

The bout will likely suffer from a lack of headlines leading up to UFC 156, in large part because the card, as it unofficially stacks up, is loaded. Then again, like the stone-grinding that follows Fitch from fight to fight, a weak spotlight is normal for him. While Maia isn't a particularly powerful draw either, his recent conversion down to welterweight has revitalized the Brazilian jiu-jitsu wizard's prospects of fighting for a UFC championship

Maia looks every bit a serious, well-rounded mixed martial arts contender, and Fitch is the perfect guy to test that

"He's really a monster at 170," Fitch said. "I was surprised at how big he was down in Rio [at UFC 153]."

Really? One of you blokes voted me down for voicing my opinion? That is very mature.

I'll pick Maia any day in this one. Fitch will try to "grind one out" but Maia's not going to come in cocky and reckless throwing spinning shit like Silva did and his ground game is levels better than Silva's, who almost beat Fitch on the ground. Maia by UD or sub.

Fitch 30-27.  if he fights the way he did vs silva, he should beat maia with ease. maybe even TKO him with GnP

Yes, I want to see Jon Fitch work his striking game. He has shown improvement to his game and I'm interested in seeing more. He showed some crisp, technical combos vs Alves(second time) and he landed a good one on BJ when they fought. I would like to see more of that. I didn't say I want to see both of them Stand N Wang. Why should I have to defend wanting to see evolution in a fighter's game?

Fitch can win no matter where the fight takes place, I just want to see him show off some of his improved striking.

as good as Maia is as a grappler, I don't see how anyone in there right mind would bet against Fitch here.No matter how you feel about the guy as a fighter.
