Benson Henderson: I'm not ashamed to put my faith out there

by Jeff Schapiro | source: christianpost.com

Christianpost.com recently did a piece on Benson Henderson, and his faith, as expressed immediately following his win over Nate Diaz at UFC on FOX 5 Saurday night.

Before answering any questions for UFC commentator Joe Rogan during his post-fight interview inside the cage at Seattle's KeyArena, the outspoken Christian fighter took a moment to acknowledge God by quoting the Book of Philippians.

"'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.' Can I get an amen?" said Henderson to the sold-out crowd of over 14,000 people.

After retaining his title in what Rogan described as "arguably the most talent-rich division in the UFC," the outspoken Christian fighter took a moment to share the emotional weight he carried throughout the competition.

Henderson dedicated his performance to his teammates, Victor and Yaotzin Meza, whose mother is currently battling lymphoma cancer. He also fought for his business partner, Joe Ervin, whose teenage son passed away just last week in a hiking accident.

"Fighting's cool. I love this guys, thank you guys for all of the support. Seattle, I love you, but fighting is just a small part," Henderson told the crowd. "There's a lot more to life, guys. There's a lot more to life. Hug on your loved ones, cherish them. These moments we have together, they're a lot shorter than you think."

At the post fight press conference when asked if there was a conflict between his religion and "beating somebody in the face," Henderson said he doesn't see a conflict between his faith and competing in the sport of mixed martial arts.

"For me it's more of just a daily walk. It's what I do every day, it's not really about putting on a show ... It's about your daily walk with the Lord, and I'm not ashamed to wear it on my sleeve," he said. "I'm not ashamed to put it out there. Another thing: I'm an emotional fighter, I'm an emotional guy. That's what helps me get worked up in the right mental frame to go inside the octagon and try and beat somebody up."

Clearly the place I took the discussion is far removed from the initial post.

Can you show us where there's anything in the NT about "pushing" anything "down the throats of others"? Or is that an assumption you've made based on how you've seen some Christians act? @Mouth, in the context of this discussion (i.e. Benson's post-fight thanking the Lord), I don't see how you can compare it to a "junk mail" approach. WE are the ones who choose to watch fighters fight, knowing that the winner will likely get interviewed after the fight. Them stating anything they want--whether it's "Praise Jesus!", "Thank you to my sponsors!", "You try doing this with a fractured skull!" or "Weed is the best grappling tool in the world and aliens built the pyramids! Praise Xenu!"--shouldn't be a problem with anyone in a free and rational society. Nor is it in any way "pushing" anything on anyone. Someone with a sound and solid worldview should never get offended by anyone else stating theirs, particularly if they do so in a respectful and non-threatening manner (which is all I've ever seen from fighters like Bendo, Rich Franklin, Fedor, and many others). @Beastro, I agree with you about fighters who claim to follow Jesus, yet act contrary to their faith in an unrepentent manner (profanity, arrogance, general douchiness). I've never seen Vitor act in this way since becoming a Christian, but perhaps he has. I think to the degree one professes their faith publicly, they are subjecting themselves to a higher level of scrutiny...and deservedly so. To whom much is given, much is required.

Some things bug me when it comes to this topic and I say them as a Christian:1: Fighters who lay on their religiosity thickly and are not humble about it. Vitor is the worst case, imo, and it's a big reason why I cheer on the other fighter.Fedor, GOAT arguments aside and if you get pissed at his "God's Will" for losses and retirement is not someone anyone can say rubs his religion in peoples faces.2: Praise for walk out music. I hate Praise, it's always sappy and saccharine, it is not music to walk out and fight to. If you want something Christian to walk out and fight to, find something country or traditional, most of all Johnny Cash.

No it's more like me calling Honda and asking them to remove me from their mailing list because I'm sick of the junk mail.

I don't care what he believes I just don't understand how he says time with your loved ones is short if you're going to spend eternity together.

Yep, the Bible commands Christians to go out and push that garbage down the throats of others.

I think it's more like saying it's okay for Honda to continue running ads and sending you savings offers even after you've bought a Toyota in hopes that you'll realize Honda makes a better car and switch someday.
