Did GSP make the right call choosing Diaz?

by Kevin Iole | source: yahoo.com

In his latest article, Kevin Iole takes a look at the situation surronding Georges St-Pierre, a title fight against Nick Diaz in March:

St-Pierre had three options: Move up to fight middleweight champion Anderson Silva in a catch-weight bout, defend the title against obvious No. 1 contender Johny Hendricks, or defend it against bitter rival and top draw Nick Diaz.

A fight against Silva would have made the most money, but after having been sidelined for 19 months by injury, St-Pierre understandably wants to remain active. He said that after his successful title defense against Carlos Condit on Nov. 17 in Montreal, he was back working out three days later.

In order to fight Silva, who walks around at more than 220 pounds, St-Pierre would have had to bulk himself up considerably. He walks around between fights in the high 180s and said that if he chose to go up, it would not only take months to put on the needed muscle, but he likely wouldn't be able to drop back down to welterweight.

The fact that a portion of the fan base is outraged that St-Pierre opted for Diaz and the big money speaks to the fact that most of the time, UFC champions face the logical No. 1 contender.

In a sport like fighting, however, where a career can end in a split-second, one shouldn't fault an athlete for accepting the fight that will pay him the most. It's a business and none of his fans will pay his bills if St-Pierre is injured and can't fight again.

When you find yourself at St-Pierre's level, you take the money to secure yourself for the future. He did that.

So UG, did Georges St-Pierre make the right decision in choosing to fight Nick Diaz and avoiding fights with Anderson Silva or Johny Hendricks?

Lole is a pompous moron. Anyone who has had the displeasure of being around, knows it.

I think that GSP made the right decision here. I'd love to see him fight Anderson Silva as much as anyone else, but he's not obligated to move up to a heavier weight class. A lot of the fight game is about entertaining the fans, and I think that GSP vs. Diaz is an interesting fight. Sure, Hendricks deserves a title shot, but he can wait. Diaz is a bigger name and still a good fighter.

I still think he wants to beat a guy who disrespected him and made it personal but I guess I'm in the minority

Nick hasn't even beat anyone in the top 10, its a disgrace to the sport that he got the title shot over hendricks.GSP will destroy Nick, and then laugh all the way to the bank.

Nick is way more well rounded.  Anybody who talks about footwork is a jackass that knows nothing about MMA.  ITs like talking about leg kicks,  whats next?  Arm punches?

How the hell do you think Nick is more well rounded than GSP? GSP is the most well rounded guy in mma, Nick can't wrestle and though his boxing is very good, his footwork and unwillingness to adapt create holes in his stand up.

"If he came back and picked the Hendricks fight people would be saying he ducking Nick" That would be an odd thing to say.

This is bullshit. Real fans know he is taking care of his investment. he is making bigger bucks fighting nick and saving his body. If he loses to silva his stock goes down. He beats nick he may not make as much money but his stock wont go down. Cuz he wont lose. Then he beats henndricks. But hendricks is a flash in the pan right now. As much as i hate to say it nick is the better choice. Hendricks deserves it but diaz pays better. At this point in gsps career he deserves to pick a fight or two.
