White: Bad scoring kills my business

by Dave Doyle |

Saturday night, judge Adalaide Byrd provided White with his ammunition for the evening with her scoring of Jamie Varner vs. Melvin Guillard fight. While judges Mark Smith and Cecil Peoples scored the bout 30-27 in favor of Varner, Byrd saw the fight 30-27 the other way.

"The fight capital of the world," White practically spit. "30-27 Guillard. It's unacceptable. It's a joke. It's literally a joke. Seriously, the athletic commission must want to dig a f---in' hole and bury themselves when someone says 30-27 Guillard. They should want to dig a hole and bury themselves."

"It kills my business," White said. "Manny Pacquiao lost a fucking decision in that fight, and what happens is, the first thing you think is, and I hate Bob Arum, I can't stand that f---ing guy. He didn't fix that fight. He had nothing to do with it. I'd love to sit here and b---- and say ‘Bob Arum rigged it and he did this'. He didn't.

"It's decisions like this and the 30-27 Guillard tonight that just, it does kill you. People think that it's us. A lot of people aren't educated on the fact that the Nevada state athletic commission actually picks these people and allows them to keep judging fights."

The UFC can't have anyone else sanction their fights (at least, not in most states with a sanctioning body) because it is compulsory. If he for example put on a fights in Vegas without utilizing the NSAC it would be an unsanctioned bout and he'd be in big trouble. Now as for whether they are necessary for the good of the sport anymore... I dunno. I'm sure it does molify some of the naysayers and haters to have an "offical" governmen body overseeing what some see as a bloodsport.

Zuffa (including Dana) was able to get a sport that was virtually banned up and running with unified rules and full support of NSAC. I'm sure if they applied the resources they could improve judging. Perhaps by coming up with their own MMA judging certification program. I'm sure this would be a lot of work and and it take more than a one day class to certify refs and judges but it could still be done. However, I don't believe that there is anything that will ensure that judging is always perfect. This has been a huge problem in every combat sport we've seen to date. I've seen even worse calls in Boxing and Judo. Hell, even BJJ can't seem to resolve the takedown/pulling guard debate much less how to resolve a draw between someone with a great guard versus someone with a great top game.

Regulation = Increased Safety + Fairness Increased Safety + Fairness = Voter Support Voter Support = Legislative Support Legislative Support = Legalization of Support Legal MMA = Better Fighter Conditions + Legit Promoters + Reduced Criminal Element Better Conditions + Better Promoters + Less Criminal Involvement = Happier Fans The problem isn't regulation. The problem is how judges are chosen and removed from consideration.

Last time Dana went off on NSAC and judging, Kizer brought up that Dana brings in those same shitty judges for international, no state board, fights....Interesting point, right?Max

I was thinking, maybe they could threaten to never bring a fight to Neveda again until they fix their judging, and stop with their b.s

Viva - ^ Yeah, but zuffa is a big org. IF THEY really wanted to do something they could. They just dont care. This is just empty P.R
What would they do?Back another candidate for Governor? How hard? What happens if their guy loses? ... they still have a casino business to run.On top of that, the connections the members have may be party-affiliated, or major state industry-affiliated, rather than tied directly to the current Governor.Seriously, what would you like to see them do?P.S. Say they do go "all in" in Nevada. Great. One state down. Now what about every other state the UFC hosts an event? Repeat the same thing everywhere?
