Matt Hughes retires, takes VP job with UFC

source: bleacherreport.com

Hughes may be retiring from fighting, but he won’t be leaving the UFC fold.  He will move to a new position with the promotion, Vice President of Athlete Development and Government relations.

In that role Hughes will serve as a mentor to all the fighters currently under the UFC banner, a role that many other professional sports have a former superstar athlete serving in.

In announcing Hughes’ new role and retirement, UFC president Dana White praised Hughes as a fighter “that always held himself to the highest ethical standard” and commented that he was an individual he knew he could always count on, no matter what the request.

Ask a few 01ers if they feel the same way...while you're at it ask Jens Pulver :-)

I liked Hughes until I saw him at UFC 112. (Huge Renzo Fan)man has done a lot for the sport.

I love to hate him, you need those guys. Respect on a career completed, as much as I dislike the man I pay respect to his contribution over such a long time to the sport. Legend status easily achieved...fuck that was hard to admit.

Respect Matt.   And Tito has massive loyalty issues

Sad to see a legend go - and I say this as someone whose top 5 MMA moments ever includes GSP finally beating Hughes.Never liked his attitude or personality, but the guy was a beast in his prime. Can't knock him for the blood and sweat he left in the octagon.

His questionable ethics regarding shooting animals aside, I've always liked Matt Hughes. Great fighter and seems like a decent guy.

Thanks Vixen for understanding that wasnt a knock on Tito in any way. I'm a Tito fan as well and be has freely admitted he made some mistakes in his dealing with the UFC. No one makes the right call 100% of the time. Ultimately I think things worked out pretty well for Tito but he unfortunately made some short sighted decisions that held certain parts of his post fight career back. With pinishment Althetics and his management company, I'm sure he's not hurting, at least I hope not.
