Dan Henderson: I won that fight, but not officially

Many argue coherently and intelligently that Dan Henderson is the best fighter in the history of MMA. To clinch that imaginary title, Hendo would have to add the UFC lightheavy weight belts to his Pride and Strikeforce titles.

Hendo was scheduled to fight Jon Jones last year, but an injury forced him out. Had he beaten Lyoto Machida Saturday night he would again have been rewarded with a title shot against the winner of Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen at UFC 159.

If Cecil Peoples had his way, Hendo would have won, but the other two judges ruled it for Machida, and thus a title shot is now some wins away.

“Normally that’s not my type of fight, a little bit boring,” Henderson said at the UFC 157 post-fight press conference. “He did a good job moving around and was real hard to hit. I needed to stay in his face and cut him off a little bit better and make him fight. He did a good job not fighting.”

“I won the fight, but not officially. I hit him whenever he wanted to fight. He ran away most of the time.”

FightMetrics showed that Henderson did indeed outstrike Machida for quantity, but 54-28. However, All but one of Machida's strikes landed significantly, something less than half of Henderson's did.

And so Lyoto Machida get the next title shot.

What do you think UG? Did Hendo win?

even Dan said in the coutdown. he had to come after Machida early b/c it was only a 3 round fight. He knew he wasnt going to win if it went to the score cards

Hendo deserved the win . Machida was just running away all fight and landed a couple of nice strikes here and there while running aways. Lyoto should get passed over for a title shot. Chaels already said he wont fight lyoto because the crowd where booing him and I dont blame chael

I don't think I've ever seen it in mma.I actually scored the fight a draw with machida rd one, Hendo rd two, and 10-10 rd three. I just didn't feel like either guy really 'wanted' it.

^ yes, they can there are a couple problems with that though:1) The judges rarely have used the 10-10 in the UFC2) Machida landed significant strikes every round

Can't a judge score a round 10-10 if they feel neither fighter landed any significant strikes?

Footwork is kinda scored in the context of octagon control and aggression but again many people that think Dan won are forgetting that aggression only comes into play when a round is close and neither is able to do much. People forget that aggression is ineffective aggression if a guy is coming forward and missing and getting countered. So Machida wasnt just winning the footwork battle, he was winning the striking battle because he was hitting Dan and Dan was hitting him.
