How Ronda Rousey changed women's MMA

by Ben Fowlkes | source:

It's funny how quickly Ronda Rousey went from being the impatient line-jumper of women's MMA to its superstar messiah.

Remember where she was this time last year? Remember back when Miesha Tate was the Strikeforce women's 135-pound champ and UFC President Dana White seemed pretty certain that women would never fight inside the octagon? Back then the story was how Rousey, who'd logged only 138 seconds of cage time as a professional, had talked her way into a title fight that she didn't deserve, a fight that was "pretty ridiculous," according to former Strikeforce champ Sarah Kaufman.

Even Tate, who stood to gain a lot from the rivalry Rousey had intentionally drummed up with her, bristled at the way the trash-talking judoka had gone about grabbing such a share of the spotlight.

I think that the article and some sports writers are hyping her up far too much. Usually that means if she loses, they will mop the floor up with her like they do every rising star.Women's MMA was granted life from Female Boxers, specifically Muhammed Ali's daughter. She started the "pretty" face femme who could fight, because as you know the majority of female boxers were butch looking at first.Women are also very exciting to watch. Remember Chuck Norris's kickboxing organization? It was the women that were putting on the show more than the men.Sure there were already Thai Boxing women and it Gina and the like that brought their Thai Boxing stuff over to MMA.Carrying with them the pretty face and femininity, but with fighting skills. And of course there was the Cyborg, who destroyed anyone in her face. She still managed to try to look feminine at ther photo shoots.Ronda, Tate and Kaufman are just a long line of women that are keeping guys interested and bringing in both men and women who are curious.Guys want to see pretty girl (two pretty girls) getting on in a cage, mud or oil. We don't care as long as there is action and they are nice to look at.

Why you clicking on threads about her? Just skip over them if you don't want to hear about it.

Pretty much everything that can be said about her has been said 15 times using different words.  That's enough.

I'd say if you're looking to avoid hearing about Ronda Rousey.. you'll probably just want to stay off of MMA sites for at least the next week. Or deal with it.
