Arlovski: Why training boxing with Freddy Roach was a mistake

Famed boxing trainer Freddy Roach has worked with a number of MMA notables including Georges St-Pierre, Tito Ortiz, Andrei Arlovski, and most recently Muaricio 'Shogun' Rua.

While most fighters offer high praise for Roach. WSoF fighter Arlovksi feels it was not the best use of his time.

Arlovski, who fights Anthony 'Rumble' Johnson on Saturday's WSoF event on NBC Sports Network, trained under Roachin preparation for his 2009 fight Fedor Emelianenko. The training appeared to be paying off, as Arlovski was getting the better of 'The Last Emperor' until he wasn't. Arlovksi inexplicably tried a flying knee, and got caught with a clean shot while in mid air, and went out.

"I'm going to stick with Greg Jackson and other trainers from Greg Jackson's gym if I'm going to keep on fighting," said Arlovski on the MMAJunkie Radio Show.

"I paid too much attention to boxing. I wanted to try professional boxing. That's why I didn't focus on wrestling and jiu-jitsu, and it hurt me."

"This is a camp that's much, much better than before," said Arlovski, who has gone from an 0-4 skid to a 4-0 streak. "(There are) a lot of sparring partners, so I'm more than happy.

"It's good to have light heavyweights and heavyweights because they're not going to be too relaxed in the sparring or the wrestling sessions. You have to be ready all the time to do something or defend something. The last two weeks have been going very, very good for me because I spar a lot with Travis Browne and Jon Jones, and it definitely helped me a lot for my fight."

"Definitely I learned from Freddie, and he taught me some cool stuff. But at the same time, I was hurting my momentum in my MMA technique, and I had some problems with my other coaches. It was a good experience, but I'm not going to come back again to a boxing gym."

The thing is that there's so much potential for UG News. The UG forum is a hub of the best online MMA interaction available – yes, there are endless crap threads, but there are gems too. UG News should become the standard of MMA news, not lower itself to crappy standards carried elsewhere. If an article's title misrepresents an interviewee's words, then instead of keeping that title and making excuses for it, UG News should create a new one that's accurate and genuine. In the blurb make note of the shitty title so that we all see what bullshit the other site came up with so we know. If UG News wants sensational content then why not access the resources of the UG Forum? UG News could offer its own awesome content through countless other avenues, such as Romo Comics/Dailies, exclusive Q&As, interviews, etc. At this point its just bottomfeeding off bottomfeeders and making excuses for it. Unfortunately few here like it, let alone admire it.

It's a shame that Roach taught him that flying knee that led to his demise in the Fedor fight.

LOL, exactly. They were probably ecstatic that they had an excuse for it this time. Good thing it has nothing to do with Dana. UG blog is useless, tasteless and should just go away. It takes up space and intentionally tries to be the tabloid/tmz section using misleading thread titles to generate hits and that somehow makes it a useful tool.

Kirik, I don't think people are saying that you guys are trying to put a spin on the original piece. The issue is that a spin is being put on what Arlovski actually SAID.

A better title IMO would have been"AA: I paid too much attention to boxing." That at least would be a direct quote, would serve the function of summary, and the language is unambiguous. The title as is, "Why training with Freddy Roach was a mistake" has multiple possible meanings from the outset. One is that it suggests Freddy was not a good coach for Arlovski. But the article doesn't bear this out. AA says he learned quite a bit from Freddy. The problem was in focusing on boxing, and therefore any boxing coach would have limited AA's training in the same way. So training with Freddy per se was not the problem, as the title might imply for many, it was the overemphasis on boxing. The title as it stands is something a reader will disambiguate as he reads the article. But it's better to stick with titles that don't require that disambiguation. This is the risk that every non-direct quote summary runs. Summaries should always be pulled from a direct quote when possible. Of course they can't always be. But a direct quote is always best, because it rarely requires the kind of deciphering needed in the case at hand.No big whoop, and it's hardly a massive twisting of what AA said. It's just a little bit off, and it doesn't have to be because a direct quote was available as an article summary.
