Yesterday the Swedish MMA Federation announced that it had decided Alexander Gustafson would be unable to compete in Saturday's UFC on Fuel TV 9 main event due to a cut suffered by the lightheavyweight. Gustafson had hit his face in training and suffered a facial laceration requiring three stitches.
It is not uncommon for UFC athletes to go into fights with bumps, bruises, and sometimes cuts, as training camp for fights are very tough. Athletic commissions are supposed to keep the fighter's safety in mind, but at the same time promoters have spent many dollars promoting events and specific fights, and if any injuries are minor, would likely prefer to see their athlete compete.
Usually UFC President Dana White agrees with decisions made by commissions and values the importance of fighter safety, but in the case of Gustafson, White tweeted today his thoughts:
This pic was taken of Gustafsson today and u can't even see the cut!!! Worst decision I have EVER seen to pull fight pic.twitter.com/u5YwsxA0Pf
