Gustafson wants Machida, or fill-in fight next

by Steve Marocco |

Alexandar Gustafson was scheduled to fight Gegard Mousasi in this past Saturday's UFC on Fuel TV 9 main event, but instead was forced out of the bout after suffering a cut. Today his trainer revealed what his fight wanted next

Gustafsson trainer Eric Delfierro today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the Swedish light-heavyweight recently made two requests to UFC matchmakers: be an injury replacement for the division's next title fight, or face ex-champ Lyoto Machida.

Of course, since Lyoto Machida is the No. 1 contender, he might wind up doing that anyway if the winner of an upcoming title bout between champ Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen is hurt or takes an extended break. Jones and Sonnen headline UFC 159 later this month.

Machida, who outpointed Dan Henderson to secure a title shot, recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) that he'd rather stay active than wait for the opportunity.

I like the idea of Machida/Gustafsson but I think Lyoto should wait until after Jones/Sonnen to sign off on another fight. It will already be 2 months off for Machida since his last fight by the time Jones/Sonnen happens...if the winner comes out of the fight without much damage Lyoto should just wait for the shot. If the champ gets banged up and wont be able to defend the title for another 5-6+ months and Machida wants to stay active fighting Alexander makes sense. UFC Rankings have Machida at #1 and Gustafsson at #2 (which I agree with)...why not make it happen?

I like Gus a lot. I personally want to see him get his shot at jones. I think his can give jones a lot of problems. And if jones dominates Gus it shows how good Jon really is.

Both guys are available and Machida said he wants another fight before fighting Jones. Neither of them will make credible contenders as is so needs to duke it out to make a clear no.1 contender. There's really no reason not to make this fight. Machida wants it. Alexander wants it. We want it. Just do it already.

honestly i think the kicks from the first fight were still in machidas head....shogun threw 6 kicks in fight 2 and ya were more for gauging range, he landed 1 body kick right before the ko

Would have fought with a broken hand. Didn't fight with a three-stitch itch.   Wants #1 contender match.   No.

I know exactly how both fights went.  Shogun used leg kicks and body kicks to win the first fight (in most people's eyes), and he used them as a means to gauge distance and range in the second fight. Kicks, not punches, were what gave Machida so many problems in both of their fights.

I don't think Gustaffsons hands are good enough to make Machida think-it won't be like the Rampage fight-Gus is not known for one punch power. IMO he will play his usual counter striking game and use his speed as an advantage.
