Sonnen: I don't have a UFC contract

In a business were athletes can make millions of dollars per fight, especially where PPV revenue sharing is involved, it's almost impossible to imagine that an athlete could compete in such a bout without a contract in place, but that is exactly what Chael Sonnen revealed today:

In a recent interview with former WWE superstar Stone Cold Steve Austin on "The Steve Austin Show," Sonnen revealed he did not sign bout agreements for "The Spider" or "Bones" and his contract with the world's premier mixed martial arts (MMA) organization expired four months ago.

"I never, to this day I don't have a contract to fight Anderson Silva," Sonnen stated in the interview. "I never signed an agreement that said I would fight him, we never picked a dollar amount, we never picked a weight class. Nothing. I told those guys I would show up and I did.

"They never had a contract with me, they said what they would do and they did. My UFC contract expired about four months ago, I don't know if they just haven't realized it because they're so busy, or if they just know they don't need one with me. But, I got a world title fight coming up, we've got a sold out venue -- I don't have a piece of paper with my name on it or Jon Jones' or anything else, but I don't need one either."

Anyone with half a brain or who has any experience in the business world will know he's just spouting bullshit.Of course he has a contract, there are things covered in there like medical insurance and liability waivers, things the UFC would NEED to be signed. So yeah... I feel a bit bad that jones is shitting on his 'style of promotion' but he clearly feels all he needs to do is step it up a notch to keep the sales flowing.

So does every other fighter and businessman in the entire world. All out for number 1 and in fighting it is about number 1, because the number 2 is trying to lay you out and take the only title

Don't have to, Chael couldn't buy a takedown in round 2 and got finished shortly afterwards.   I have never seen so many people make so much of losses by finish.

LOL...only did well in the one fight huh? How can you be so obtuse? He had a 10-8 round agains Silva in the 2nd round! Derp. From BloodyElbow:UFC Middleweight Championship: Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen - Round 1 - Silva comes out firing punches and Sonnen just quickly takes him down. Sonnen firing punches to the body and Silva was looking to get his legs up for a traingle for a moment. Anderson using butterflies to try to keep him off balance. Sonnen passes to half guard. Sonnen working some knees to the body and palm strikes to the head. Chael looked like he wanted to lock up an arm and then misses a big punch. Sonnen with a series of hard right hands. Sonnen grinding away with punches and elbows still and now moves to full mount with a little under a minute left. Sonnen just dominated this round. DOMINATED. 10-8 Sonnen

Fair enough, but how do you explain round one of their second fight?

What I'm saying, is that the UFC probably has more to lose by "not having a contract" with a fighter going into a fight because they have no recourse if they guy should no-show.Like, if Sonnen decided at the last minute that he wouldn't fight Silva unless Dana gives him $500,000 in cash before he steps in the ring, the UFC couldn't sue him for breach of contract since he doesn't have one. However, if he DID have a bout contract and decided at the last minute not to fight, the UFC could potentially sue him for the damages from losing their main event. Not that they would be likely to recoup those losses, but the financial ruin serves as a better dis-incentive than the threat of unemployment.

Willingly accepting a public ass-beating isn't as ballsy as a man can get, but it's pretty damn close. It takes less courage when his think they will win, so if what you are saying is true, then... false.

This thread is hilarious, some poster actually make me a fan of Chael, moreso than any of his fights at least.
