Hendricks: GSP should vacate to fight Silva

Yesterday UFC President Dana White revealed that he had not made definite plans for Georges St-Pierre's next bout and it was up to the welterweight champion. He could either defend his welterweight title, or fight a superfight with middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Number one contender Johny Hendricks doesn't care what he does, but either way he wants to fight for the title next:

Hendricks, who's won six consecutive UFC bouts, said he would wait for St-Pierre if he went for Silva's belt, but would like the champ to vacate it. He's tired of waiting.

"That's what I've been preaching for the last six to eight months," he said. "I want to fight GSP because I'm a competitor. I want to fight the best guys in my weight class. But also, the belt is more important than GSP, and that's really what I'm looking at.

"If he wants to go to 185 then by all means, go to 185 and fight Anderson Silva. Yes, it would be a great thing for our sport. But I want the belt. I'd like to fight GSP for it, but if that doesn't happen, I'm not going to hang my head and say, 'Oh man, I'm going to be fighting that guy for the belt.'"

I think that sword cuts both ways.On the one hand, you take a risk staying active in that a loss will lose you your title shot.On the other hand, intentionally remaining inactive is exactly what can stunt an up-and-coming, surging career. It's like when Hendricks was saying he wouldn't fight unless it was for the title. While he's sitting on the bench, a guy like Maia is probably one sensational victory away from being the guy everyone wants to see fight GSP.Fans are fickle; taking yourself out of the game can be almost as bad as a loss.

I'm not saying the hasn't earned it.He's got the resume. He's got the fan support. He presents an interesting matchup. Everyone wants to see the fight. If it doesn't happen next, it'll only be because GSP is fighting Silva in what HAS to be the biggest superfight in UFC history.Dude is GOING to get his shot. He just needs to be patient. It's just that for me, as a fan, constantly complaining about stuff (title shots or otherwise) is the kind of thing that really turns me off.

In the build up to GSP vs Diaz I really didnt like hendricks whining cos I thought it was a bit premature and kind of annoying. But now, denying Hendricks any longer is a crime. The dude has fought awesomely and really ought to be rewarded for his efforts. He has nohing left to prove, he is a clear #1 contender and should be given a shot at gold asap. Whether GSP fights him or vacates the belt a decision should be made sooner than later.

At what point did it be come a fight at 185lbs. Wasn't it suppose to be a catch weight? I may have missed Dana saying 185lbs, but if it is a catch weight then no one should lose their title just fight for bragging rights.

Yes, yes, yes.Beat GSP or your not the champ. Gold means nothing in WW division, overcoming GSP means everything. Full stop.Plus it WILL be catchweight. UFC isnt going to sarifice either MW or WW champ for the sake of a payday. It'll be neutral ground, no gold.Superfights are for dominant champs, if your next in line bad luck

I disagree that hendricks is whining. Like many other guys, he doesn't want to get screwed.Look at what happened to Pettis. Was supposed to get a title shot, then got played. He tried to fight to stay busy and ended up getting LnP'd for a decision loss and lost his title shot. Hendricks has every right to make a stand for his title shot. The opportunity can become pretty elusive if he's not careful.
