Benson Henderson retains title, wins split decision over Melendez

Another lightweight title fight, another razor-close decision.

Despite a spirited early effort from former Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez, Benson Henderson retained his belt by a split-call.

The lightweight title bout, which unofficially capped off a night of matchups between the shuttered Strikeforce and the UFC, was the main event of today's UFC on FOX 7 event at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. It aired on FOX following prelims on FX and Facebook.

Two judges scored the contest 48-47 for Henderson while one dissented for Melendez by the same score. The decision was roundly booed by the crowd, which repeatedly chanted for Bay Area resident Melendez before and during the fight.

Benson is one of my favorite fighters. That being said, I just don't see a fire in him anymore. His motivation seems to be not to lose. In his wec days he was a killer. Those were some great fuking fights. The man was a monster who couldn't be submitted. I think the Pettis fight was the same as the fight GSP had with Serra. I honestly think that Henderson won that fight but got robbed by "the kick" but it changed his style. Benson only fights if he gets pushed lately.

r 5 coulda been a draw too. ben took the first half and gil the 2nd imo. gil was chasing him a bit but never effective in that moment

i had bendo taking r 4 in both viewings. not by a huge margin. i suppose r3 10-10 is just as fair a score as gil taking it by a hair, btw

now i saw r 3 in slo mo this was a very close round the easy-to-see stuff like 2 takedowns and a leg kick "knockdown" (more like a sweep effect) had me and judges giving it to bendo previously.   upon 2nd watch, closer inspection has me giving it to gil by a little. he won more of the exchanged and landed some good punches to the head.   so now i have gil winning 3 rounds, and consequently, the whole fight. i have also made myself look stupid, since i gave 3 rounds and the win to bendo watching live.   also i watched with no sound this time. lol?
