Nick Newell lightweight title stripped by XFC

XFC president John Prisco has bluntly announced that highly respected fighter Nick Newell has been stripped of his title.

Q: How disappointed are you that the Lightweight Championship fight between Nick Newell and Scott Holtzman is not going to happen?

John PriscoExtremely disappointed. I’ve never had a champion refuse to defend his title. Signed fighters in our organization have put in the time, effort, and literally blood/sweat/& tears. We have some very talented Lightweights and every guy on the roster knows from the beginning they’re going to have to fight the top fighters in the division to get their crack at the belt. Hell, many of the guys in our organization have similar XFC records to Nick Newell. They have paid the price to get to this point in their career. So for Nick to deny Scott Holtzman, or any of those that earn their shot, the same opportunity that he was given, is disrespectful in my eyes.  It’s always been our motto, if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. How can that happen, if your Champion will not defend his title. That’s not a true Champion.

Listen, when Nick came to us at the XFC Tryouts, his biggest complaint was that no one would take a fight against him. Everyone was telling him, it’s a no-win situation taking the fight. If you beat him, you beat a guy with half an arm…. and if you lose, you just lost to a guy with half an arm. He knew by signing with our promotion that he was going to be guaranteed fights, as our fighters fight the person I put in front of them. Nick built his name on fighters who were willing to step up and fight him. And now, the opportunity he received, he is not willing to extend to Scott, even though they both carry the same XFC record (4-0). To me, that’s hypocritical and I have zero respect and no room for any individual that acts like that in my organization.

Q: Why do you think Nick was not willing to fight Scott?

JP: I think Nick knows what I believe. He was going to lose. Nick knows he can’t defend himself when someone like Scott puts him on his back. I believe Scott is one of the most talented 155ers on the planet. He’s training on the west coast right now with Benson Henderson for that very reason. In my eyes, I saw the fight going 1st round stoppage – Holtzman by ground and pound.

Q: What went on in the conversations between you, Nick, & his management?

JP: Nick expressed his wishes to me quite some months back, that he wanted to fight ex-UFC fighters, as it would be his best route to the UFC. While I have always said we are not here to be a feeder to the UFC, I understand any fighter wanting to test themselves against those higher in the rankings. Nick was offered to fight Eric Reynolds for that reason. Then Holtzman earned his shot, in much of the same fashion Nick did. Had Nick gotten past Holtzman, we then would have put him up against one of the few new veteran’d Lightweights we are about to sign.

When negotiating with his management regarding this fight, they were telling me about being offered a lot of money to fight for another promotion. We responded that if it’s about money, bring us the best offer and we’ll agree to match that offer. They did, we matched it, and we were again refused by Nick saying he only wants to fight ex-UFC fighters.

So I had to make one of the hardest phone calls that I’ve ever had to make as a promoter, I had to call Scott Holtzman and tell him that the current champion is unwilling to fight him for his earned title shot.

Q: So what’s next, now that Nick Newell is not signing to fight on June 14th to defend his title?

JP: Nick is being stripped of the title and Scott Holtzman will fight June 14th vs a new opponent for the XFC Lightweight Championship Belt. Contracts are going out today and we’ll be making the announcement over the weekend.

Nick is wished the best in his future endeavors and we’ll leave it at that.

Newell responds:

"It's where we saw my career going and we had different views on it. I'll be releasing a statement later today," Newell explained "They did some great things for me so I'm not going to be one to say anything to that. I'm going to stay professional and respectful. It was just different paths. We had different paths of where they saw me going and it just didn't work out."

"All I can say is I've really been training hard and really improved my game so I can face the next level of opponent and really prove what I'm worth. I'm looking to get in there with experienced veterans and really prove my name and show people how good I am."

"(My next fight)'s not set yet," Newell said. "I'm going to have to wait probably a day or two and then you guys will find out. I don't like to announce anything before it's all settled in."

"I'm just ready to fight the type of opponents where I can prove it. I want to fight guys that were in the UFC and I want to fight tough fighters with big names so I can be like 'Hey, guess what? I beat this guy. I was in there with this guy, you guys think he's tough, well guess what I just beat him.'"

Once he signed with XFC they started matching him up with tougher opponents but leading up to that it was nothing but guys with losing records

The guy has 9 fights... His last opponent was 16 - 6, and then a couple guys who are 6 - 4. (while he had 7, and 8 fights)   Who the fuck should be be fighting at this point lol.

Nick and/or his management hand pick his fights, look at his opponents records and that's easy to see.I mention this every time his name comes up but a few years ago Kip Kollar from NAGA/Reality Fighting tried to set up a fight between Keith Miner and Nick Newell and Nick ducked the fuck out of that fight. Keith is the other 1 handed fighter except unlike Nick he wasnt born that way he lost his in a wood chipper accident about 10 years ago. Nick I believe was either 3-0 or 4-0 at the time and Keith was 4-2. Nick was scared to fight Keith because if he lost to another guy with 1 hand he would lose his thunder.

Because he had a fight left on his contract but he had a opt out.  So yes he had a fight left.  The article is no longer on the site or isn't showing up for me, but in that excerpt they aren't complaining that he broke his contract or did something illegal.  They're complaining because when it suited him he was fine with them putting together fights against people that didn't want to fight him because it was bad for their careers.  But when it came to his time to do the same he decided not to fight.  So they're complaining on moral grounds.  He complained about guys not fighting him because they said it was bad for their careers and it was a no-win situation.  Now he's refusing a fight on the same grounds or even less justification since XFC see's his opponent as being game and worthy.

You'd think If Nick had fights left on his contract.... it would be easy for the XFC to prove. Seems like they need a champions clause like the UFC does.

Are you guys men?Who the fuck sits on a forum taking the piss out of someone with one arm. If he was your kid I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be making fun of him anonymously. The Guy's a skilled fighter and if he picks his opponents I don't respect that but wow you guys are just assholes.

How could both be true? They claim he has fights left on his contract, he claims his contract is up and he isn't renewing. He either has fights left, or he doesn't.
