Maynard may have retired if he lost to Guida

It's been almost a year since Gray Maynard's last fight, a split decision win over Clay Guida. The fight was the main event of a UFC on FX card and was one of the less exciting fights in the history of the UFC. Guida bounced around as he does and he and Maynard barely exchanged in the fight. Maynard was frustrated with how the bout went and says he considered not fighting again had the decision gone the other way:

Had one of the two judges who sided with him in the main event of UFC on FX 4 this past June given just one more of the five rounds to Guida, Maynard wonders if he'd even be the subject of a story right now.

"Most of the time, people get pissed at what I'm doing (in a fight)," Maynard told ( "But that time, I got pissed at what he was doing. It's an emotional sport. That happened, and thank God I got the win on that – because I don't even think I'd be in the sport right now."

As in retire? Quit? Adios? Maybe, the two-time lightweight challenger said. Had his hand not been raised, he might have just walked away.

"I don't even want to talk about it," he said. "I can't believe it was a split. (But) it happened. I thought long and hard about that."

Can you really blame people for not allowing fighters to ride on what they use to do and what they do now? Maybe this obvious negative energy will change the carpenter for the better.

Pettis and Hioki were his last two wins and they were horrifically boring. Then there's the Maynard fight...guida is awful to watch now

This is ridiculous. He's had 5 fight of the nights. Out of those, he is 1-4 - yes - but the Sanchez and Griffin fights could've gone either way, he was kicking Huerta's ass before the sub, he beat Diaz and he did pretty well against Benson compared to Miller and Diaz. Then add in the SotN performances that were great - especially the Gomi sub. He did what he had to do to beat Pettis. The Hioki fight wasn't even bad. He beat one of the top ranked FWs in his FW debut. That's no easy feat. People called him a permanent gatekeeper for years. He's changed up his style some and has become a legitimate contender that has been ranked in the top 10 in 2 weight classes now.

He's only exciting when he's getting his ass kicked, that myth is dead, finally. Also, one fight? I present you Anthony Pettis and Hatsu Hioki. But ya that myth is dead, stop clinging unto it.

I think Maynard has the tools to beat Bendo. Very underrated (and under-appreciated) fighter, IMO.

Guida's had one of the most entertaining careers in the UFC. One unmistakably odd performance and so many people are saying he should never have been allowed to fight in the UFC again. Holy short term memory...
