White: I want BJ Penn to retire

As has now become customary at UFC events, Dana White engages the media in a scrum. Surronded my microphones and cameras from major media outlets and MMA media outlets, White answers quick fire questions about the event and often about a random array of topics. At the post-fight media scrum, White was asked about the future of sure UFC Hall of famer BJ Penn:

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White, however, last night (Sat., May 25, 2013) reiterated his opinion during the UFC 160 media scrum (watch full video here) that he feels the proud Hawaiian should hang up the gloves once and for all.

"I want B.J. Penn to retire," White said. "Dude, you've won belts in two different weight classes, you're one of the greatest ever and you became a huge superstar. You have money, you have a beautiful family. But, it's hard man, it's hard to walk out of that arena that is packed with everyone screaming your name and you're making tons of money. It's hard to walk away from that -- really hard to walk away from that."

"B.J. is too tough for his own good," White said. "B.J. might not get knocked out, but the shots that B.J. took would have knocked out a normal human being. He's had his head bounced off the canvas like a basketball by Matt Hughes, Georges St. Pierre and Rory MacDonald just did it to him. B.J. Penn has left that Octagon looking like a fucking alien. He's too tough for his own good. You don't knockout B.J. Penn -- he absorbs every amount of punishment you give him. It doesn't mean he hasn't taken any damage … he's taken a lot of damage. And I don't want to see him take any more."

34 isn't young for professional athlete and BJ is def not in his prime.

I absolutely agree that there is no need for Penn to retire. BJ is only 34. He's still in his prime, imo. The only condition under which I would say he should retire is if he will not take his training 100% seriously, which would also means fighting at LW. If his head stays right, and he takes his training, diet, and health seriously, he could fight for another 3 or 4 years, maybe more. It's all up to BJ. He has the ability to fight at the highest level still if he chooses to.

BJ won't go out in a loss. He's not that type of guy. I'd like to see him go on another run at 155. I think he's still got it in him, but he's my favorite fighter and I'm a so called nut hugger so...

Bj should just drop back to lightweight, Frankie is no longer the champion. Bj would have new challengers to face. Melendez, Maynard, Benson Henderson, Nate Diaz just to name a few.

WAR BJ, but I hope he knows when enough is enough.  Baby Jay has been there, done that, and got the T-shirt.   He has nothing to prove to anyone, but if he really wants to fight, then let him.     BJ is no spring chicken, but he's tough as nails and fun to watch.  If he picks and chooses his future fights carefully and continues to enjoy it, why not?   WAR BABY JAY, YOU CRAZY GLORIOUS HAWAIIAN BASTARD!   MEAN STREETS OF HILO REPRESENT!
