White: It is not worth waiting too long to retire

At the UFC 160 post fight press conference, UFC president Dana White announced the retirement of UFC light heavyweight championship winning, TUF 1 winning, UFC saving Forrest Griffin. Griffin now joins a long list of fighters that pioneered the sport but no longer fight, including Mark Coleman, Chuck Liddell, and Randy Couture.

Griffin, 33, like Bonnar before him, joins a long list of UFC superstars and former champions who have recently called it quits. Well-respected former champs such as B.J. Penn and Rich Franklin seem destined to do the same soon.

White says he is saddened to see some of MMA's biggest names — and most marketable commodities — hang up their gloves, but he thinks it's often in the fighters' best interest.

"I know this isn't how promoters are supposed to talk, but I care about these guys, and I don't want to see any of them get hurt," White said. "It's not worth it."

Easy for you to say Dana....easy for you to say.Set up a pension for fighters and THEN you can make those claims. Guarantee them some form of healthcare after retirement and THEN you can talk about when they should retire.

Actually, I'll be sad when Dana retires. He's more entertaining than most if his fighters. He gives the the UFC all its personality.

If any of them want to fight scrubs for money, I'm sure they could. Retiring from the UFC means you can do "pay me to shake hands and sign autographs" at every event from here to eternity. That's not alot at face value but consider most gyms would pay Griffen ALOT to come do a seminar. Why make 250,000 grand a year to get beat the fuck up by superstar up and comers when you could make $60,000 fighting nobody?

"Just think about that rivalry between Brazil and Mexico when (Velasquez and Junior dos Santos) fight. That's going to be a huge fight." lol this rivalry. Brasil and mexico are 10k miles apart, the real rivalries are among neighboring nations.
