Couture: Corner ban was 'over the line'

When son of UFC hall of famer Randy Couture, Ryan Couture, made his UFC debut he did so without his dad in his corner. The elder Couture recently signed a deal to star in Bellator's reality series and was subsequently banned from being back stage at any UFC event, including as a corner for his son. Couture recently spoke about the situation to MMAJunkie:

"In my opinion, that's over the line," said Couture, whose left his role as a UFC commentator in order to sign with former UFC broadcast partner Spike TV. The decision led to him being effectively banned from son Ryan's corner when the younger Couture made his octagon debut at the UFC on FUEL TV 9 event in April.

Now that the elder Couture is gearing up for the June 19 premiere of Spike TV's "Fight Master" reality show, where he'll serve as one of four coaches, the retired MMA legend said he has no regrets about his decision to leave his UFC gig for a more visible role with Spike TV and Bellator MMA. If anything, he said, White's verbal tirades in the media only increased "Fight Master's" public profile.

"Dana did me and the show a huge favor by creating such a media s--t storm over the show and my decision to sign a deal with Spike," Couture said. "He attracted a lot of attention to a new show. It's unfortunate because I gave the UFC every opportunity to keep me with the company, and they made the decision to pass. I think there were still some underlying issues from the previous rubs that we've had. But at the end of the day, I have to take care of me. I have a family and a legacy and a lot of things I've got to protect. If they aren't going to use me and employ me, I might as well go somewhere else where I can affect the sport, do something positive, and continue to make a living. I have no hard feelings. At the end of the day, it's all business."

I asked Keith and here's what he said:"Cornermen (and women) get licensed as seconds in Nevada. As far as the Commission is concerned, a licensed combatant can choose any such second.I have no idea if a promoter and a combatant may have discussions on whether a promoter does not want the combatant to use a certain second, and what the result of such a discussion would be."So the commission grants them a license to allow them to corner, and after that its between the promoter and the fighter.

does Randy have the same writer that Rampage does over at Bellator?

If Randy is the star of a directly competing show, then I see the decision not to let him corner as ALL BUSINESS.Maybe it seems a little more personal because it is his son.The UFC is king of the hill, and if Randy appears in their content, they are building up a competitor (for free!).

I thought Randy decided not to corner his son because he didn't want to jeopardize the kid's relationship with the UFC. Sure Randy could have done this and that but in the end he decided it would be best to just let sleeping dogs lie.No?

Randy was not allowed to corner Ryan and he was not even allowed to buy a ticket to get into the event.Cmon CindyO I expect better shilling out of you. You are clearly out of your shilling prime. Its like Ali on the ropes vs. Holmes. So sad to see.Chaelismyhero

If I was retired and I had an "in" (job of any type) with the UFC - and my son just signed a multi-fight contract with them, I'd sacrifice other more lucrative work opportunities to stay in good graces with the UFC in hopes it would help my boy's career. Conversely, if I took a better job somewhere else as the result of playing hardball with the UFC, I'd be concerned my son's spot would be jeopardized. This is what helping your kid out is all about.........but maybe Randy expects his kid to eventually get the boot, so he'll help him get a spot at his (Randy's) new job.?.I realize Randy is no longer married, but has no one else faced the wrath of their wife under similar circumstances?

also based on the potential of being denied entry I doubt Randy wanted to create a distraction for his own son on his first UFC fight. I'm sure shills will argue Randy beats puppies or something and therefore doesn't care about his son but this issue is not cut and dry that either is right here.
