Askren: I'm the best wrestler in MMA

Undefeated Bellator welterweight champ Ben Askren outstruck Russian Andrey Koreshkov Wednesday night by a margin of 248-3, before winning via TKO in the fourth round.

If his style is not fan friendly, Askren says that it is reality - wrestling dominates MMA.

"I'm a wrestler, I'm the best wrestler in MMA," said Askren after the fight. "Wrestling is, was and always has been the most dominant mixed martial art on the planet. That's all there is to it. We all know it, some people want to fight it, some people want to doubt it, but wrestlers rule the MMA world."

"You're either the heel or the face right? For me it's really easy to be the heel. Just like some stupid people think WWE is real, some people think that the persona I play is real as well and it's easy enough to trick them. They love you or they hate you, but either way as long as they're not neutral about you, they'll turn your fight on. There's a lot of people that tuned into Spike tonight to see me get knocked out.

"The likelihood of that happening was about one percent, but there was still that chance they could have seen that happen."

When asked to compare a theoretical fight with UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre to the Koreshkov mauling, Askren said GSP would be a tougher, but only by a little.

"I think it would be a little more difficult," replied Askren. "But something like it."

While Askren would not confirm it with B/R, it appears the fight with Koreshkov was the final one on his current contract.

"I guess the secret's out," Askren answered when asked. "We'll find out, not sure."

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney confirmed that Askren’s bout at Bellator 97 was the final one. Bellator has an exclusive negotiating period to work on putting a new deal together and likely has the right to match any offer sent Askren’s way.

Except Ben Henderson, Gilbert Melendez, Anthony Pettis, Josh Thomson, Carlos Condit, Johny Hendricks, Chael Sonnen, Alistair Overeem, Daniel Cormier, Big Foot, Werdum, etc. Jacare and Mousasi are soon to be added to the list. You meant they come into the UFC, and the ones who do well people forget they came from another organization, while the others who don't are still associated with their past one.Mind you the UFC MW champ Chris Weidman would have been in Bellator if not for a fluke occurrence where. And Bellator doesn't exactly do the heavier weights very well considering they offer them the same as their featherweights. The supposed failure, Lombard, came in the #6 ranked fighter in the world and fought like it. Wrecked Palhares, got robbed against Boetsch (high majority of media cards scored for Lombard), and lost a competitive one to Okami. Sixth in the world sounded right. Those who argue he was a bust, like most who are heralded that come from other major orgs, have selective memories.Imagine this, the only Hodge winner in MMA, who actually won it twice, calling himself the best wrestler in the sport. How dare he when he doesn't fight for the best organization when the then #2 or #3 offered him a significant contract a couple years before the #1 would have. He should have done like you would have and made yourself and your family be paupers during that time for the chance to compete in the #1, only organization that matters to YOU, a little earlier. Oh, and you better hope you don't lose one on flukes that happen in MMA, or it's going to be even longer. The nerve of him saying this before he's established fighter in UFC, when that's all he can do for some people is say it right now, rather than show it, even though, like aforementioned he already proved he was the best wrestler in a sport called wrestling.

GSP vs Askren: The battle of the wet blankets! Make it happen!

So your proof he has good BJJ is an interview?

Askren actually does have good BJJ, he just refuses to use it because he's too conservative and wants to just blanket people. Trying to pass or sub opens up chances for your opponent to counter. That being said, I want to see him vs Maia in the UFC; when he gets choked unconscious, maybe people will stop saying he has any right to challenge GSP.

But keep in mind that A Silva came from Pride (as well as other smaller shows).
