Davis earns controversial decision over Machida

Eventually, Lyoto Machida's habit of playing it close to the vest was going to backfire. Saturday night turned out to be that night for the former UFC light heavyweight champion.

While Machida was rarely threatened over the course of 15 minutes, Phil Davis scored takedowns late in each of the first two rounds of their UFC 163 fight in Rio de Janeiro. And that was enough to sway the judges, if no one else at HSBC Arena, to give Davis the decision. Davis won with 29-28 scores across the board.

No...It's possible that the judges actually scored the fight corrrectly.

Is it possible the judges overcompensated in order to not show a hometown bias?

Not placing Fightmetric over my own opinion, like I said I had Machida winning a UD. However, seeing those stats gives me somewhat of an idea at how anyone could score that fight differently

The statement Dana keeps making like a broken record, is a throwback to the days when the UFC was simply a Tuff Man contest.  Those days were mostly haymakers being thrown back and forth until somebody went down.  That's what Dana likes and if you ever watch who he talks about, he doesn't care when they lose as long as they went out there and "showed up" and he won't cut them.

Davis was not the aggressor the entire fight, not even the majority of it. Machida was far less "elusive" than normal. He actually held the center for the majority of the 1st two rounds, which was shocking, and he without a doubt landed most of the significant shots of the fight. I hate defending Machida, but he won that fight.

Not a Machida fan but he was robbed tonight. Machida pointfights too much but Davis is an even bigger pointfighter and didn't deserve this win. Almost all of his strikes have nothing on them! Machida was actually more aggressive than normal and landed most of the significant strikes of the fight. I guess all you have to do is throw at air and go for takedowns and these naive judges will give you the round even if you weren't actually successful with anything. These judges are morons and the AC's are incompetent. One of the judges even gave Davis round 3! Phil should be ashamed of himself. Really getting tired of cheap pointfighting and terrible decisions tainting this sport.

Ultimate Wrestling Championship? Seems like there is definately too much of a trend towards putting and overemphasis on the takedown when judges score a fight. Admitted, a takedown is definately points towards control on the octagon, but if not further offense is gathered, ten it shouldn't really count for being as big of a game changer as it is currently scored as.

I agree with this here. The statement "don't leave it in the hands of the judges" is ridiculous and should not exist. Especially when the person is not a fighter and doesn't know anything about finishing a fight. It's a subjective statement that really offers an excuse for poor judging, rather than an effective approach. What, like a fighter can just be like "cool, I guess I'll just start finishing every fight now". It's not that fucking easy. Especially for guys like Machida that are counter strikers, and depend on the offense of their opponent to make a mistake and get an opportunity to KO somebody.
